Jax' L99 F350 7.3L Truck rebuild . . . .

Greetings, all;

I have been looking for a HD - any make - to pull a bigger travel trailer but all I find is a lot of people too super-proud of their vehicles with 200k+ mileage. Therefore, I bought this to build my own - the engine is a literal basket case...

1999 FORD F-350 SD LARIAT Ext Cab LWB 2WD
7.3L V8 OHV 16V Powerstroke . . . Orig mileage 245083
5 speed 6 speed manual transmission

I want to build the entire power train - I suspect the rear is not limited slip - and want to fix everything Ford did not do right when it was built. I want to make it as efficient as possible in AZ's 120F heat to the northern regions.

I have rebuilt small block chevys, two motorcycle engines, but this is my first time on Ford and rebuilding a diesel (although I have worked on them).

Thank you all for all the wisdom posted on this website.

Best recommendations for aftermarket upgrades?

Go for the bearing... All the roller bearings/bushings I've seen and messed have caused problems. Pistons look great.. a little sanding and some paint and you should be able to throw them back in >:).

Machine / rebuild shops chosen

I'm taking the block, heads, etc to https://www.larrysengine.com/

and the ZF-6 transmission to Lloyd's Transmission,

both of which are in Tucson, on Monday.

The clutch fork is known to break and then you have to pull the trans to replace it. The clutch kit comes with a pilot bearing, you can upgrade it when you check out.

Also don’t just look at hp rating but it also has a towing weight rating.

Re: Jax' 1999 F350 7.3L ZF6 Transmission

I drained the oil from the tranny. While it is red against a white background, it came out black as sin!

I'd post a pic but all the files are 1.5MB.

Anyway, it is black-black-black, but there are no little sparklies on the bottom. So, good sign!

Jax,

Do some research on transmission oils. I have read that the Fords recommendation of using ATF in the ZF6 (and ZF5) may not be the best choice. RoadRanger recommends a synthetic mineral oil (PS-386) for their transmissions that I would actually be tempted to use in the ZF5 if had I kept that transmission. The RR stuff is pricey stuff for sure. I'll take a pic of the jug I have this evening and post it.

Yeah, I have. Everyone keeps talking about the higher viscosity fluid for the 2006 and above. I will also ask the transmission rebuilder what they recommend.

All-in-all, I am pleased with what I have found in the truck.

#42 ·
So, the leading contenders For the ZF6 transmission oil are

Motocraft Mercon V

Redline MTL

Castrol Transmax Mercon-V 06068 not synthetic

Royal Purple Syncromax

#43 ·
Ford made some change in Mercon-V for the automatic clutches that they said could make transfer cases lock up. So they offered a fluid for transfer case and transmissions only. Now they have discontinued that in favor of LV auto trans fluid for all manual trans and transfers.

Turbo, exhaust choices

I am tentatively choosing the KC38r turbo with a 4" stainless steel exhaust.

Again, I am looking for a solid, reliable, long-lasting tow truck preferably with good MPG.

Too much?

What injectors would one pair with this?

#45 ·
Get rosewood or swamps injectors. 160/0's or 160/30's. Great choice on the turbo.

Yeah just a 4" is fine. Jamo fits pretty good and is good priced.

Y'all keep talking about the exhaust pipe -- what about the manifold? Do I stay with the stock manifold?

#54 ·
Stock is fine. Use gaskets when you go back in. Up pipes I would buy bellowed ones. I bought the dorman ones and they fit ok. I would test fit them on the turbo before hand or buy international ones. But they are $400 vs $150 for dorman.

Not to completely throw a wrench in the process but have you looked at any t4 setups. Your close to the same price after getting a new pedestal and up pipes. The sxe 364.5 would be a good size with the injectors I recommended. Plus you can sell of some of your old parts to make up the difference. If your an e99 the turbo parts are smaller and you have to buy other parts to get the KC turbo to fit.

Post up a pic of you spider for the turbo and I can tell you what turbo you have.

Thank you, I will research.

Would you please define "early" 99? The truck manufacture date is 12/98.

I may take a while getting a picture. Right now, the parts are carefully wrapped so they do not get dusty or damaged.

#58 ·
What size are the plenums on the heads?

#62 ·
Okay, pardon my unfamiliarity with diesel and nickname talk.

Is the attached the plenum? If so, 3"

Also, what people are calling a "spider" - is that the intake manifold?

Lastly - is the KC38r worth $1600?

My goal is reliability and longevity . . . .

So the early 99 aka e99 has some different parts vs the L99-03 trucks. It's a high rabbit hole. I thought the e99 trucks ended in March of 99 but I'm not sure. Plus they where using up parts so you could have a mix of e99 and L99 parts. It would be best to read up on a few e99 threads.

Gee, thanks; You just made my head hurt. . . .

I don't know why the drag-and-drop rotated the picture.

Sigh. On hold with the tranny move to Tucson. They have too much work. They will tell me when I can bring it up. :bsflag:

Ok you have a L99 plenums. You should have an L99 turbo if they didn't get new heads.

Thank you so much! :x I believe the heads are original.

Do you have a recommendation for the delete turbo pedestal?

#66 ·
That one is ok but the kc turbo already has the high flow outlet. Just get a pedestal from kc when you get the turbo.

Diamond eye is ok. Fit is just ok. Look up jamo

Engine block, heads, crank, and cam dropped at Larry's Engine and Marine today. They will clean it up, check it out, and let me know . . . . ?

Drive shaft dropped at Precision Products Driveshaft for U-joints, carrier bearing and balancing. $330

1.5 hour drive one way. At least now, I feel like I am getting somewhere.
