So the fitting on the head broke off in the head... I would suggest an easy out first... those fittings are not that tight in the head... should be able to do something to get it out of there...

 

You should be able to use a set of left handed extractors. They work well.

 

I wouldn't let a fitting make me pull a head and spend a lot of ca$$ unless you wanted to work the heads anyway

 

If an easy-out doesn't work.... hammer in a torx bit that will fit securely and it should come out. Don't pull the head just yet.

 

i bought some sqaure extractors, the kind you peak in , also did try a torx bit, and i can not get it to turn out. the left handed scerw extractor's didnt bring it out either. any idea's, it seems to be pretty tight, like its cross threaded or somthing. any ideas, will it be easier to pull the motor?

Can you get an angle drill in there to drill a little deeper into the fitting to get the extractor in?

 

and is shaving's in the rail a concern, or are they to small to worry about?

 

ok, so i got a left handed drill bit thats fit the inside of the theards. things is i can not get any of my 2 drills back in there to work or see. how would i get the head to seal back up with stock bolts IF it has to come off. or jus pull the motor? that is 2 big jobs for such a stupid mistake.

You're in a really crappy situation here. If you absolutely cant get an extractor of some kind of torx bit inside the threads then you really don't have any choice other than taking the engine or the head out and extracting it then. There probably isn't any tips or tricks that anyone can give you for the situation you're in... if it can't be repaired while in the truck, it's got to come out.

well guys finally got the motor out and the head was cracked right around the hole for the check vavle in two different places. not sure how this happened unless it was already cracked. but i have an old head gettin checked right now. any advice how to get the injector cups out of my good head completly intacked without hurtin them so i can put them in this other head. will to post pics of carnage tomorow.

wat r ur thoughts on the head being cracked in that piticular spot.

I think you would be much better off using new injector cups. They cant be that expensive.


Maybe the fitting was cross threaded and it cracked the head. Or maybe all of the attempts of getting the broken fitting out. :shrug:

 

You need to buy new injector cups. Don't bother salvaging the old ones because you'll never get them out and then back in without some kin of issue.... and then when its all back together and there is fuel in your coolant.... you'll be doing injector cups.

Get the cup install tool and just buy 4 new ones. They are less that $14 each. I knew the guy at the counter at my local IH so I paid $4.63 each.

Don't mess around with old injector cups.

In this picture, off to the lower-right there is a round plug. What CSIPSD is saying is to weld up the cracked fuel port and abandon it, and use the round plug off to the right as your fuel supply port. Diesel Innovations sells the fuel plugs you would need to utilize that port.

That is really your best, and only option.

 

Might sound a little hillbilly, but I would get a steel 1/8" NPT plug, bottom it out in there and weld it up. Then use the fittings that David has for the ends of the heads.

and would a weld have problem's holding the fuel pressure or would it? i do have a mig on hand.

Its only holding 50-60-70 psi... I would weld it up, grind it, check it out and weld it again. Give it a shot...

Just bottom out the plug as far as you can.

I see no reason why the head would have to come off.

 

You could probably pressure test it before you stick the motor back in too...

Do not "bottom out" a plug. The thread in that head is tapered pipe thread and most likely the head cracked from being over tightened at some point in time. if you screw another pipe thread fitting or plug in there too far, itll crack even worse.

Do you plan on other performance mods in the future? or you just want the truck running as it was?

 

i do plan on some more mods as time allows (have a few goodies going in while she is out) .

what about putting the plug in the top of the hole and welding up?
do you think it would be better to replace it, that way i wouldnt ever have to worry about the weld coming apart or somthing. i am shure that the injectors are coming out anyways so i can clean the debris out of the rail or can it be done with them in. i do have a good head sitting.

 

if you have a perfectly good head sitting there and a few bucks to have a machine shop check it out, recup it, and then your time to slap in your new springs and a few bucks for a new head gasket, id go that route. Why chance any more leaks, cracks or trash in the system with your current head when you can just as easily roll with the new one.

 

but i have heard a lot about new hg's not sealing correctly and i already have the head gasket the machine shop is waiting on me. the head cleaned up real nice and is still flat, wtih a new mating surface it should be fine....?

my motor does not even have 25k on it since install 2yrs ago so the block surface should be fine.
and if she comes apart. stud's.

 

Just put the plug in, to keep any weld debris out, weld it up and be done.

 

its up to you but the only mods that will give you hell would be ones that crank up fuel pressure. i would weld it.... however you have the motor out so... its your decision to be red neck and or pay the cash up front and no worries. my vote not that it matters is to weld it

 

o, and i should metion that i havent got all of the theard's that broke out and its kinda like the rest of is sized in there.
