Thats crazy! I change mine every 15-20,000 miles and I suggest using synthetic oil as well. I use synthetic oil in everything, engine, trans, transfer case, and front and rear diff.
Okay. Guys at advance gave me mercon v atf. Is this okay? Now I did notice the manual says the tranny and rear axle have fluid for life and should just be checked. Does this sound right? It also doesn't mention anything about changing the differential fluids.
Fill for life isn't right. It is what the manual says, but it isn't right. That was done for marketing reasons, so Ford could advertise a lower cost of ownership. Consumer Reports makes a big deal about that, and people listen.
Ya I do my front diff every 100,000 and my rear diff, trans, and transfer every 50,000 but I dont pull much more then 5,000 lbs on weekends in the summer months. I too use full syn oils and never have a problem.
Not on mine; lots of room down there since mine's a 4x4. The only real issue is getting the new fluid into the rather high upper fluid hole. I killed the little pump thing I had had for about 20 years, so the next time I do it, I'll have to buy another one.
I used Amsoil's fully synthetic ATF fluid for 6 speed manual.
Between me and my dad we have 4 7.3s that are all over 200k we changed the front and rear diffs, and the transfer cases at 200k. We run a snow business so we use 4x4 allot in the winter and when we changed them the diffs needed it pretty bad but the transfer cases was just as clean as the new oil we put in. We figured that 200k was enough so we changed them all anyways. For the way we use our pickups the diffs will be changed at 100k next time but if we wasent working them like we do I would wait for 200k
Ever change your tranny fluids? My truck has 170k and I'm not sure if any previous owners changed these fluids or not but figured they could wait til 200k. I rarely use my 4x4.
ya thats the problem i have runned into, you have no idea when the last time the previous owner changed the fluids or what they changed them with. my 7.3 has 190k and im debating on just changing every fluid on the truck, so i know exactly what i have in the truck and im going to just go full synthetic.
With every vehicle I buy the first free weekend I get, all the fluids get done along with the fuel and air filters so I then know when they were done last and when there due next. Just a good practice to get into.
I just had my front and rear and tranny fluids checked and they are all orange. Looked and smelled good. The dealer I got it from said they had serviced it so maybe they've already been changed.
Fyi...Walmarts house full syn gear lube is actually a good lube. Read alot of reports positive for alot less money. 100k max on diffs with Amsoil. Amsoil recomends like 75-80k. Amsoil will greTly lower temps, especially in the tans &I transfer case. Mobil 1 synthetic Atf at auto zone is $6.50 qt. Great atf for $3.00-3.50 qt less than Amsoil. I'm a Amsoil fan but can recomend these others with confidence.
I run the mobil 1 in my tranny and transfercase and powersteering and it works great. Been in them for 3 years and 50,000 miles with no color change at all.
