So I've been told not to change the transfer case fluid in my 2000 7.3 6 speed f250. Has anyone ever changed there's and had any problems?

That sounds whacky to me. I don't think that's correct.

That is the right fluid.

Fill for life isn't right. It is what the manual says, but it isn't right. That was done for marketing reasons, so Ford could advertise a lower cost of ownership. Consumer Reports makes a big deal about that, and people listen.

Not on mine; lots of room down there since mine's a 4x4. The only real issue is getting the new fluid into the rather high upper fluid hole. I killed the little pump thing I had had for about 20 years, so the next time I do it, I'll have to buy another one.

I used Amsoil's fully synthetic ATF fluid for 6 speed manual.

Good luck!

Between me and my dad we have 4 7.3s that are all over 200k we changed the front and rear diffs, and the transfer cases at 200k. We run a snow business so we use 4x4 allot in the winter and when we changed them the diffs needed it pretty bad but the transfer cases was just as clean as the new oil we put in. We figured that 200k was enough so we changed them all anyways. For the way we use our pickups the diffs will be changed at 100k next time but if we wasent working them like we do I would wait for 200k

ya thats the problem i have runned into, you have no idea when the last time the previous owner changed the fluids or what they changed them with. my 7.3 has 190k and im debating on just changing every fluid on the truck, so i know exactly what i have in the truck and im going to just go full synthetic.

Fyi...Walmarts house full syn gear lube is actually a good lube. Read alot of reports positive for alot less money. 100k max on diffs with Amsoil. Amsoil recomends like 75-80k. Amsoil will greTly lower temps, especially in the tans &I transfer case. Mobil 1 synthetic Atf at auto zone is $6.50 qt. Great atf for $3.00-3.50 qt less than Amsoil. I'm a Amsoil fan but can recomend these others with confidence.
