Anyone done a rear main seal? I changed mine and i dont know if ive done it correctly. Fact, im almost possitive i didnt. Its leaking. So i pulled the old one off. Pryed the ring off, cleaned the rtv. Reaplyed the rtv, left the seal together on the ring. Slid it on the crank. Took a rubber mallet and went around and around untill the ring was all the way on the crank. Then took the flexplate and bolted it on. Now shouldnt the spacer seat the ring the rest of the way? Im aware they do make a tool for this. Does this tool set the ring farther. And if so how much?

you separated the wear sleeve (ring) from the seal?

if so, that's a problem.

...and are you sure it was the rear main leaking, to begin with? Rear mains are a very uncommon leak source on the 7.3's...very uncommon...until they are F'd with.

degrease everything, apply red (liquid hydraulic) Loctite to the inner diameter of the wear sleeve.

apply a decent amount of the "International Gray" silicone sealant (don't use the paper gasket, if it was supplied) to the part of the seal assembly that will seal to the rear cover...

(As one assembly) gently start the wear sleeve onto the crank journal, and then use the flexplate adapter and the OEM 18mm bolts to push the seal onto the crank (until flush with the end of crank)...

We use 3 of the factory bolts (~120 deg apart) and a stack of washers to pull the seal down...add washers as necessary to take up the slack.

The leak could have very well been from the rear cover . That is where mine have leaked from . I did change the rear seal while I was in there . The rear cover where it hits the oil pan is where mine did the leaking . Might want to check that out while you are in there again .

I did not seperate the seal from the ring. And used the flexplate and the spacer to finish setting the ring. I used a mallet to get the ring on almost all the way. Were gonna drop the tranny today to see if thats where its comming from. I should have just left it. But i figured that block has been sitting from a few years now. Ive got the motor out, might as well replace it while its easy to get too. Shoulda left it alone.

I am not looking to hijack, but I would like to ask a question. I had my rear main replaced under warranty and about 5k later, I believe it started leaking again. How can I make sure that it is the rear main and nothing else? It is not leaking from the valley. I pulled the inspection plate and how do I rule out the oil pan vs. the rear main? Also, could they have screwed anything permanently, or is the worse case that I am going to just have to redo it? Thanks

The rear cover could be leaking . I dont think you can see everything from the inspection plate . The tranny has to come out to be able to see it all . If you take it back in and let the garage inspect it they will probably tell you that it was something else that they are not liable for .

Yep, I agree. It started to leak again about 12 months after the repair but it was a SLIGHT amount of oil, so I left it. So it will be up to me this time anyway. I know they would blame it on something else anyway. So, I guess I will watch it and take it from there. I just wasn't sure if I could make an accurate diagnosis with the tranny in place. Thanks.
