purchasing a 6.0

Hey everyone, I've been browsing this site and it seems to have alot of great information about all the powerstrokes. I have a 2007 Duramax which is a lease and is going back in April of this year. I've been contemplating either a 7.3 or a 6.0. I know some people give the 6.0 a bad rap but they do seem to be great running engines. I do have a few questions about them. If the work needed (ie head gaskets, studs, egr and cooler) are done is the engine more or less good to go? I don't plan on towing anything more than about 8k occasionally and using the truck for snow plowing (small lots). What is good mileage to be looking for a used 6.0? I have seen quite a few with over 100k on them and selling for good prices. I plan on keeping this truck for at least 5 yrs and having something I don't have to worry to much about. I know every vehicle has its ups and downs, I also do the majority of my own work (certified tech). I like the coil front suspensions and the power available from the 6.0 as opposed to the 7.3. Being that I have a EFI live tuned duramax (runs extremely good) I figure that stepping in to a 7.3 would be quite a difference. I have seen more reliability from the 7.3's from first hand experience but I am not one to bad mouth the 6.0. I also saw a few for sale that were lemon bybacks. Would this be a bad move being they were lemons or is it kind of a toss up with the work being done? Sorry for the long post but I am somewhat new to the 6.0 and if i do purchase one I'd like to think I could keep it for some years. Thanks for the help in advance and am looking forward to getting in to a blue oval.

thanks guys

Nick

If you have the money on hand to address all the issues with these motors (BTW, I'd also include injectors in your list), then you'll probably be happy with one. Personally, I'll stick with my 7.3, but all the 6.0's I've driven are bad ass!! They run awesome... when they run.

If you just perform normal maint on them they will do all u need them to. Oil is to a 6.0 what blood is to you. and you will not live long with bad blood cuz.....6.0 have a 5 yr 100,000 mi warranty and Ford sells an additonal extended for 200,000. All that being said it is the black sheep of powerstrokes as they are very high maint. No more diff from your wife or girlfriend and when it talks at ya it sounds damn good! You will see a lot of posts saying you can get 7500 to 10k on an oil change and that's BS! Not all but most doing so are the same ones bitching about the 6.0...Just my 2, but hey what do I know I only own one.....

Good point on the injectors, I forgot to add that. Whats the warranty on the 6.0? If any? I was certainly leaning towards the 7.3 and would still like to get in to one but its tough finding any with less than about 125k. thanks for the heads up

6.0 factory warranty is 3yr 36K bumper to bumper, 5yr 100K powertrain. If the truck has always had oil and filter changes, I wouldn't about the injectors being an issue...

one of my friends has a lemon buy back 6.0 and it runs like a champ. its all stock and he tows with it almost every day. the truck gets beat and has never broke down since he owned it.

Great guys I really appreciate the info so far. I've got another 2 months before I'd be purchasing one but I'd like to get as much info as possible on them. Thanks again guys

do the headgaskets, studs and EGR delete and you should have a pretty good truck. The better tranny, newer truck, and more power make the 6.0 a better choice compared to the 7.3 IMO. I like the 7.3 too, and the fuel mileage is better, but I like the newer style truck the 6.0 comes in and the torqueshift tranny.

Definitely appreciate that info. I'm hoping to find one that the work has been done already. If I get an oasis report and it states that the work has been done does that mean it would be good to go reliably? As in, its a one time kind of thing? Or are they prone to going thru headgaskets and whatnot more than once?

Haha nice. To be completely honest I'm only looking to open up the exhaust and a filter set up and possibly an economy tune (for mpg). I'm not looking to make a speed demon with either the 7.3 or the 6.0. I have my EFI live tuned LBZ (07 duramax) and it runs mid 13's. I loved it at first but its a 7k truck. I use it for truck purposes not racing lol. Sure its great but for me not needed for me. Whats everyones opinions on the auto transmissions? Strong? I had a 91 bronco with the E4OD trans and to be honest I wasn't a fan of it. Always felt sloppy. I'm looking for the manual trans but they seem tough to come by.

Bought mine brand new in 2004, only minor problems. Over 92000 miles, it towes a few times a week and is my daily driver. If you dont take care of it, just like any other vehicle it will give you problems. Stock to stock, it will run circles around my 7.3.

My first was an 04 6.0L, not one problem, ran great. I now have an 05, have had it for a little over 3 yrs. Had one issue with an EGR, since then none.
Some 05's had an issue with the STC fitting, and I believe some early ones had hpop issues. The trans is pretty much bulletproof, yes the E4OD was a piece of SH*T. My 04 and this 05 pull a load a heck of a lot better than my 7.3 did.

Maintenance is more important on the 6.0L, and seems to like synthetic oil.
My friend has an 03 he bought new, now has over 150k. He owns a rental center, pull everything with that truck 10k plus, almost daily.
He has only had to replace one injector in his truck.

There are a heck of a lot more good ones than bad ones. Get an Oasis for sure. If it has had a lot of repairs stay away. If the headgaskets have been done right you will be good to go for a long time to come.

Buy smart and you'll be happy. If I had the money I'd buy another right now.

Cheers

I deal in and work on all the superdutys. Both the 7.3s and the 6.0s. If your looking for something that doesnt have to have 400+ hp w/ just a chip and be a straight out work horse with out pretty much ever worrying about it breaking then id sell you a 7.3 w/ a manual trans and thats almost bullet proof setup for you. If you wanted more power and were goin to chip it and wanted a auto. Id sell you a 6.0 at a good deal w/ no warranty from me. And personally id trust a 250k mi 7.3 over a 150K 6.0. Overall cost def. cheaper w/ a 7.3 b/c of the year and you still get just as much truck.

I really truly appreciate ALL the info you guys are giving me about the trucks. Its nice to come on to a forums site and get the needed info without all the bs. I wish I could fast forward to April when my truck goes back so I can get in to one of these. Again, truly appreciate the great info and the every day experience you guys have given.

co04cobra-where abouts are you from? I'd much rather deal with someone honest and upfront like you that knows about them. The dealers around me here don't know to much about the older powerstrokes, then again they really don't know much about the new ones either haha.

thanks again everyone

Im in WV i ship alot of vehicles out of where im at its fairly easy to get it worked out. I actually was just up in plattsburg NY dont know how far that is from you took me around 10hrs. Drove my 7.3 w/ 175K plus on it :ford: got about 16mpg and always starts even when its below zero.

Excellent guys, truly truly appreciated.
Cshsrh- I like the similarity with the wife/gf. VERY true haha. I have always done my oil changes at 2k-2500 whether its gas or diesel. I guess you could say I over maintain. So that would work to my benefit. Whats considered higher mileage for a 5.0 to purchase? I see alot of people buying 7.3's with 150k-200k on them already. Would a lets say 125k 6.0 be a good idea? With prior maintenance records of course. I apologize to everyone for all the questions. I'm just looking to buy one that I can not have to worry about for a while. I'm buying a house and won't be purchasing a vehicle for a long time.
co04cobra- plattsburg is about 5 1/2 hours north of me so the ride down to you from where I am wouldn't be bad at all. Plus it would be well worth the ride haha.

I prob would'nt go over 80k because you just never know what the guy before you thought routine maint is...I just say 80 cause it will allow a better purchase price while allowing a 20,000 mi warranty period. Just do an OAISIS report on all you look at with any serious thought.....Good luck and you'll enjoy the 6.0.
