Hey guys, looking to flush/replace all fluid in my 05. Is there any write up for a good flush or do I just keep sucking it out with a vacuum pump?
Best fluid to refill with also?

Thanks

QT*5*QM is the Ford fluid for the power steering.
You are best to jack up front end then pull the return line up at hydroboost pump at top of steering column its 3/8 and put a hose on it into a bucket.
Start truck and turn wheel right lock to left lock slowly while pressing on brake pedal every so often. Keep filling the resivor as you go. Best to do with help on the filling of the resivor. I pushed 4 qts through mine, it's easy enough. There is someting on it on you tube as well. Good Luck with it.

I use the same oil that I run in my auto trans. I also have a filter on return line before the cooler.

Just did this last night. It was cake! I feel a bit of a difference with the fresh fluid.
Here's a few pics of my operation

Another flush that is often overlooked is the brake system. Worth every dollar and easy to do especially if you have a vacuum pump.Start from furthest wheel from master cylinder and go. Gravity drain will work fine just takes longer, you will have a firmer brake pedal once done.

It will also save you big money because the calipers and master cylinder will not start pitting or hanging up. Brake fluid breaks down and loses it's lubrication qualities just like motor oil can.

Take a look at the fluid, odds are it's a black/green color which is from boiling and condensation.

Good Luck with it

I used the Ford spec fluid, for 4 qts it cost me $24.00. Didn't need that much but wanted to make sure I got all old fluid out.
They use a specific fluid for the hydro-boost, but the SP stuff will work.

Do not use power steering fluid.
I had the girlfriend in my truck and the front jacked up just a little and with her turning the wheels and pumping the brakes I flushed 3 quarts out in a matter of maybe 10-12 minutes.

Yea I know. Napa didn't have any Mobil 1. I felt comfortable with Valvoline.
Steering is still a little hard not moving while on pavement, bit she is a heavy beast.

Strange it took you that long to flush, mine came out of return line almost as fast as I could pour it in.
I did have my front end up off the ground when I did it and used the Ford p/s-hyd fluid: QT*5*QM $6.01 per quart at dealer.

As far as the heavy thing goes you are right there I had my truck on the scale a few days ago and it weighed 8,440 lbs!! Make sure your tire inflation in front tires especially are up where they need to be, it will help turning. Big tires are more work on hydraulics......

I just did it on my truck this morning.
Man that mobil 1 is pricey, 10 dollars a quart, bought three, but i think it would have been better with four...

everything went fine, very easy, didnt lift my front end up, but i got a great calve workout from pulsing the brakes!

i do recommend you tape or plug the open end of the return line, it started spewing even though I had it up and out of the way.

I have one concern, when i put the return line back on, with its clamp, it felt like i could easily pull it off, i think im going to run to the store and get a small screw on hose clamp. all that fluid made it very slippery.

I used:

3 quarts of Mobil 1, synthetic auto trans fluid, though i should have bought four

6 feet of 3/8" inner diameter tubing, its the perfect length for a non lifted truck to be fed into a milk gallon jug on the ground. it was about thirty something cents a foot at lowe's.

and preferrably someone to help, i could have finished in about five minutes if i had someone turning the wheels and pumping the brakes for me!

all in all very, very easy!

I have a process question for P/S fluid flush...
I have read a number of threads on this topic and most discuss turing the wheel with wheels off the ground and pumping the brake, others discuss just pumping the brake.

What do you all think is the 'best' method and why?
If there is no 'real' benefit in jackin' up the front end, supporting on stands and turning the wheel slowly, I can't see wasting my time.

Yes, i know this is old but why start a new thread to ask a question.
