P0299 and VGT 85% at idle

Hi all 2007 6.0 here is my prob a p0299, my VGT at cold start 85% till I drive and get rpm's to 1700 ish then it drops to normal rang drives great plenty of power and works great until i stop and let it idle then the VGT slowly go's up again (15 - 60 sec) to 85% ? I shut it off and with KOEO map 14.07 ebp 14.17 baro 14.21. then I start it KOER VGT starts out at 50-60 ish and go's back up to 85% and the map 14.6-.9 ebp 15.0-17.0 and baro solid 14.21 , now if I gun it the VGT drops to 40-60 ish and then go's back up to 85% ? it runs GREAT no issues but for the p0299 and engine light comes back on. any help would be welcome.

While your VGT numbers may not be textbook they're certainly not bad at all. I would check boots for cracks or leaks at the clamps...maybe check the hose going to the MAP. May even be not having a perfect seal on the up-pipe to turbo seal. If all that is fine and it keeps kicking out the code I would then pull it and check the unison ring/clean the turbo. Check out Diesel Tech Ron's videos. He made a few on the turbo which should really help you figure things out.

Diesel Tech Ron's RIP Vid's are great have watched most for the 6.0 . I'm thinking the sticking turbo isan't the prob it doesn't stick at any % level it go's straight to 85% if cold or sat for 10 minuets or more then started if a worm start and ya tap the throttle it comes right off 85% down to 40-60% and then slowly creeps back up again. My very all be it limited knowledge of the turbo world says something is commanding it to go back to 85% but what the F do I know 🤣

I can't recall if we have discussed it or not, but the VGT % duty cycle numbers are ONLY commands. Not indicative of a position of the turbo vanes themselves. So when the VGT % duty cycle changes, all we know is that the PCM is trying to make a turbo change. We do not know if the inlet guide vanes to the turbo actually change or not.

So when we see 15% or 85% VGT % Duty Cycle, we are generally being told that the PCM wants the turbo in a position that it is not able to get to. It can be EBP or MAP values, or air flow values that the PCM is wanting to push to a specific set point without success.

Since there is no "position indicator" component of the VGT actuator, it is flawed thinking to look at a VGT % Duty Cycle command value and think that it is associated with a certain actuator or turbo vane position. It is only a command to action that may or may not be met.

Ok got it there's no feed back loop to tell the PCM that it moved. so only based on sensor data MAP, etc the PCM thinks it needs in this case more boost so it commands a high boost signal to the VGT solenoid ? am i correct in thinking the higher the VGT% the more boost the PCM is asking for / thinks it needs?

No I don't, Thanks yeah the truck is pristine, so far the only things not stock is the coolant filter I put on and the exhaust was there already and I put the dashpaq+ econ tune with 20% stiffer shifts, Oh and I saw I have a block heater on it just the heater element no plug in cord.

Are you hearing the turbo sound change when you first start the engine ?
have to be quick to get to hear the exhaust or have someone else start the engine

Normal to see the % cycle thru the ranges after the truck has been idling a few minutes
also at a stoplight the % will be pretty high, until you touch the accelerator pedal -- helps keep the turbo spooled up for when you are ready to take off

I haven't tried to notice a sound change at start up I will check that today , after Idling a few min when up to temp I have seen it do the up & down of the VGT% but only some times and yes up to temp at stop lights it will be in the 70 ish range. I do have a 10% dead throttle at cold start and when up to temp its only a 5% dead throttle, but the overall APP is reading the throttle peddle movement but no motor response cold till 10% and worm till 5%

Monitor for Idle Verification Switch
you wont get any throttle response until the PCM gets verification from the pedal switch
a worn pedal can cause some of your problems -- but otherwise sounds pretty normal to me

ForScan is the goto tool for these trucks -- the windows version will allow you to control the turbo while sitting still
BAFX or ObdLink MX+ adapters work well -- both ate bluetooth

Ok so throttle sounds typical I can live with that , and yes I have the bafx and forscan win, forscan will let you simulate the PCM signal to VGT solenoid ? if so can I look in the pep hole on top of the turbo and see if the solenoid is moving or the unison ring or the vanes?, now my truck is a 2007 6.0 forscan will do that??? that would be awesome.

Just go 99 - 100 on the control
this is a quirk of ForScan, it will fully open and fully close the VGT
you should hear the exhaust goto a deep sound, then to the jet engine
yeah, map and ebp should have been changing

All this may mean the solenoid is not getting control voltage or the unison ring is stuck or the solenoid has a hydraulic problem
what you are doing is commanding the vgt, it then has to respond
you could use a small light bulb in the harness to see if the brightness changed -- like a #194 or 168

I like it that sounds like a plain, that's exactly what I'm trying to do , confirm that the ring is moving or not and to what degree if possible. Thank you!

Oh ok youtube first I'll give that a try. yes the EBP was I bit cruddy the tube not so much. next up is a blue spring should be here on Friday it may have one already there are zip ties on the fuel lines. then we gear up for the EGR cooler and a remote IRP oil cooler, need to get a job or two before that one.
