Hey guys,

I have a 1999 F350 superduty crewcab dually with 7.3 and manual trans....4:10 rearend. I have towed my 40' rv 5th wheel approx. 13,000 pounds and did fine with it.

Do you think I can tow a 48'er that weighs close to 25k pounds? Can I do any mods to my truck to be able to do it???

Thanks!

Are you going to be towing it all the time or just once?

In stock form, that 7.3L will have a tough time pulling that weight, unless you are on flat land. Should be fine if that's the case.

If you plan on pulling any grades and want to keep speed, you would greatly benefit from a good tow tune, intake, exhaust, and gauges. We can get you all these if you are interested.

Thanks guys....I was already fairly convinced the realistic answer was a "no" for being able to do any serious traveling with it....I don't want to damage the truck or travel unsafe. But I just wanted to get honest feedback from other owners. I have pretty much decided if I follow thru with the purchase of the RV I will just sell my truck and replace it with a medium duty truck.

As for the concern of CDL...it is an RV so it doesn't fall under the same rules/regs....(but it doesn't really matter anyway, I have a class A cdl)

Thanks much,
Phil

Hydraulic brakes? Even air over hydraulic exempts some vehicles in certain states but I know anything over 26,000 you need a 'B' CDL, if it's a trailer you need an 'A' but that's just where I'm from in Pennsy.

So like a triaxle dump truck with 72,380# in the box is just a 'B' CDL here. Tow an Eager Beaver trailer with a backhoe on it, now you need an 'A'

But that is a little much to put on an 8 lug 350 rear

Ok....I'm confused and trying to learn what does not come 2nd nature to me.

I have been looking at some heavier trucks to be able to tow this 5th wheel trailer. Looked at some F450, F550....even looked at some class 6 medium duty trucks FL60, FL70.

Do some of these heavier trucks come with the same 7.3 powerstroke and 6 speed manual drivetrain I have in my current F350 truck?

Would I just have to upgrade the rear suspension and rear axle in my truck to be able to tow the 28,000 pound RV?

I'm sure it would be difficult and probably expensive but what if I added an additional dully axle to the rear of my truck and turned it into a mini semi with 8 tires in the rear....would that allow me to carry the pin weight? Or is the truck just to small and weak to pull and stop that much trailer?

Is the frame of the F350 and say F550 the same?

I have been on some of the RV forums and there I am being told I definitely need a class 5-6 medium duty truck....and maybe even a single axle class 7-8 semi tractor.

Don't get me wrong, I want to by all means be safe, but I really don't want to buy more truck than I need just to pull the trailer a few times a year at the most.

I will say I towed our previous 15k pound 5th wheel Rv 40' trailer several thousand miles and the truck seemed fine. But this new one is almost twice the weight and 8' longer....I'm probably talking myself into a medium duty truck as I type this.

Just looking for opinions from more knowledgeable folks than myself

Thanks

25K. Wow. I’ve been worried about my 15k 5er :)
I always send the fam in a 2nd vehicle because I’m “overweight” at 23k combined. It seems ludicrous to gave a CVWR of 20k when the truck weighs 8k with me, diesel, and the dog. Technically my 2001 DRW can only pull a 12k trailer? More like 11,600 if the whole family is in the truck. Seems like 90% of our trucks are overweight a LOT. Am I missing something? I see 7.3s pulling 3-car trailers all the time.

Pulled 2 Modified 4X4 pulling trucks (grossing 27,500#) over 130,000mi. with a '99 7.3 crewcab without much trouble. Had 10,000# on the duels. It was stock except for the 300 HP Hypermax chip and no muffler. Wouldn't have wanted much more though.
