Need HELP- Smoke and knock.

Hi everybody. Im new to the forums here and hope someone out there can give me some advice. I bought my first powerstroke a few weeks ago and I got it pretty cheap because it ran a little rough and blows whitish blue smoke out the tailpipe.

well...first thing i did was pull the valve covers and sure enough two of the injectors in the passenger side head were not spouting any oil. I replaced the all 4 of the passenger side injectors with new alliant units and changed the oil and now the truck runs waaaaay better. All of the driver side injectors were spouting oil so I figured i'd wait to replace those untill I have some extra cash.

The truck still blows white/blue smoke out the tailpipe from startup untill warm and under accelertion at all temps. There is also some excessive cackle or knock from the injectors under acceleration but since it doesnt make the noise unless the engine is under load i cant figure out what injectors are the noisy ones.

I figure maybe one of the injectors I didn't replace is bad but if an injector is bad will it still spout oil?

Also I read air in the fuel lines can cause smoke and upon inspection of my fuel pump (the one attached to the frame by the tank) the hose that leads to the engine from the pump has some sort of fold-down clip connecter that is broken and the hose is just the littlest bit loose ( it can twist and move in and out on the pumps metal outlet about 1/8) Is this normal and is there any test I can do to check for air in the fuel?

Sounds like you got some good blow by if you are still smoking after warm up.

It's all blueish white smoke right?

Start monitoring your oil and coolant levels for one. Maybe smell the crank oil for fuel or get the oil checked at a lab for fuel content.

While the engine is idling take the oil filler cap and place it upside down on the filler hole if it blows off I guess you got some good blow by and replacing injectors aren't going to help that. Next step would be to do a compression test on each cyclinder.

How do you know the knock is not normal?

The knock could be starving injectors from low fuel pressure or yes air in fuel. If you want to check for air in fuel I suppose you could get the return line from the fuel bowl to pour into a large glass jar and look for bubbles or foam. I could not really tell you more with out hearing the knock.

Do you have access to some one with auto enginuity sofware? If so they might be able to tell you something?

Good luck.

I would think if you had a leak between the pump and engine you would have a fuel leak. If it were on the tank side of the pump it might suck some air. I don't know for sure. Good luck

Ok frashdog so I tried your cap trick. It slides off after 4 seconds. Lots of engine shaking and tilt though so its hard to tell if its not just sliding off from that alone. There is some smoke that comes out of the oil fill cap but its not billowing or thick just a steady small amount. Isn't some blowby normal on these engines because of the high compression? Its only got 140k on it, i thought it should be just getting broken in...

yea the smoke from the tailpipe is mostly white w/ a blue tint and smells strongly of unburnt fuel. It smokes from start untill warm, then on hard acceleration but not very much when idleing warm. It's always 75 degrees here so the engine is never very cold.

Its not burning any coolant Ill start monitoring oil now. 3 of the 4 injectors I replaced had lots of carbon build up on the nozzles... do you think if the other injectors have carbon build up or partially clogged nozzles that could cause my symptoms or would a clogged or dripping nozzle keep oil from squirting out the oil spout?

Does not sound like the blow by is that bad. Some blow by is normal. Can't really tell how bad unless you do a compression test. It should by fine at
140k, but you never know how it was treated proir to you. Poor air filtration (dusting) or over extending oil change intervals can push an engine to early demise. Do you know the history of service?

I'm not to familiar with injector trouble shooting but, sounds like it may be your injectors as per what you found on the others. Did you change the fuel filter? Did truck sit for ling period of time? How old is fuel?
