That's what happens after coming home from a long day at work. My Info is right once you flop what I had to 3.78 N2 and 1 part O2. Don't know how I missed that one when typing.

The nitrogen is not required, however the combustion in every vehicle has that equation as long as it's operating on earth. All other compounds of air are neglected as they don't effect the emissions enough to make note of them.

OK, I missed the part of it being a CO2 extinguisher. It makes sense that it would rob the engine of 02 without spraying all sorts of junk inside.

What would happen if you dumped a towel in the snorkel?

It would probably suck enough air through and around the towel. You would have to block the open end tightly with the towel and that still might not work.

I carry a c02 extinguisher for this purpose. I hope to never have to use it. This is the scary side of diesels I guess. Glad nobody was hurt in your ordeal.

im curious to see what you find when you get the engine apart.

I watched this video in my Alternative Fuels course at the local CC.
After watching the video, I tossed a section of 2x6 behind my seat just incase.

Unless the hood is open and the airbox is open and you have something handy right now, I don't see how you would have time to save a runaway. If you had to pull over, get your lumber/phone book or whatever out, open the hood, run around and pull the airbox cover off and stuff it in there, seems like by then the engine would already be grenaded.

Not necessarily. It's more than likely going to need to be gone through but you'll might be able to save a rod from breaking or save the block from windowing.

This a good runaway video that I've always liked, this guy had some balls for staying so close for so long, but he gets it off. Not to mention how perfect the lyrics go with the video. It also shows how long it can take to shut it off just using a shirt.

Looks like with 190,000 miles im rebuilding my turbo soon lol....
I'm at 330K with, as far as I know, all stock seals in my turbo. I need to be doing the same.

mine was at IIRC 293,000 when I rebuilt the turbo... I couldn't tell any difference between the old parts and the new.... no difference in shaft play either... I didn't know any better at the time and let fear of the unknown make the decision for me.

I think that rather than rebuild the turbo at xxx k miles I would recommend just pulling the intake and giving the wheel a wiggle..... very little up and down play and ZERO in and out play and ur prolly gtg.... also make sure the compressor wheel can't contact the housing n look for any marks where it has done so.

They really don't have "seals" in them, just bronze bushings and drain holes... you get in trouble when the oil starts leaking between the shafts and bushings faster than it can go through the drain holes.... shaft play should tell the take

well i advise everyone to get a new torso or rebuild the one they have because I'm at 287,000 miles when this happen to me... :(
new torso? sit ups n crunches??? Sorry couldn't resist...

Are you saying you had yours checked out and the turbo ended up being the culprit?

I just did my ped o-rings and checked out the turbo and zero in and out and very, very, tiny amount of play up and down at 185,000. I was shocked so I let it be and just put new o-rings on it and put it back to rest only to have to take it back out to do bellowed uppies in the spring lol.

You do your uppipes first then help me so u know how to do it. I'll get you some beer. Lol.

My turbo started leaking oil at about 145K, after a really hard run in the desert towing a boat to the ocean. I was pissed because it had only been less than a year since I had it off for up pipes, o-rings, hpop lines and Frx. Pulled it again and got a reman. Now I am glad I did. Don't want any leaks on my new garage floor, and I don't need no runaway either.
