Identifying repop PCM

Pulled my PCM to order a chip and just like everything else on this POS truck it's not right.
Took off the cover to find e9af-14a638-aa
and this is near the plug 102038706710778 remfg.

Any input on what I should do? It's a CA 97 Auto.

As Desert Rancher said, itshould be an MME7 (I totally missed the "CA 97 Auto" part of your post yesterday or I would have answered a tad sooner). A "repop" PCM should have the latest program (MME7 for you) in it. If you do get a chip for it, be careful on the install since 97 Cali PCMs are very difficult, if not impossible, to find! Cheers!

Yeah that's the conclusion we came to as well. It's obvious "someone" makes a repop computer for the 97's but I don't know who. I don't see a brand.
It should be a F7TF-12A650-RA through RH if its a 1997 California 7.3 diesel auto. 12A650 is the group part number for a diesel PCM. Just did a Google search and your part number is for a 5.8 gas engine vehicle.

Most, if not all, new chips don't care what PCM you have, the chip overrides the old programming. Just have to know the injector type.
I'm sure the part number is just for the housing the electronics are placed in. It was cast on the inside, not the exterior. Obviously if it was for a 5.8 the truck wouldn't run

In your original post you did not specify what engine you have gas or diesel.

Do you have the black fuel pusation damper on the fuel pump banjo fitting? Its about 3.5" in diameter and if you do not have this then you don't have a California diesel truck. The California truck has splitshot AB code injectors and the Federal trucks have single shot AA code injectors, chip tuning would be dependent on which kind of injectors you have, not what PCM you have. The PCM code is just a handy identifier for what truck you have but is not a guaranteed method for knowing if you have a California truck.

Well, If it was a gas truck then the 94-97 powerstroke section on PSN would have been a bad placement for a thread.

It's a CA 97. VIN confirmed, carfax confirmed, valve cover has an AB appendage to the part number and has a tag approving the use in calfornia emission controlled vehicles.

I think you'll find that the number you posted, e9af-14a638-aa, is for the electrical connector housing on the PCM case. Since that is a common plug on a Ford product, it may have been used on a multitude of vehicles. Any Ford PCM would have "12A650" as it's basic number.

Google says that number is for a gasser 5.8 PCM. Several references there for it. I was surprised.

However, just wanted to make sure you have a California Diesel truck. The AB on the valve cover sticker is relatively meaningless, the Cal approved part does mean something, but valve covers can be switched or an engine swap.

The black fuel pulsation damper is the one surefire external visual verification of a California diesel 1996-1997 whether it has the glow plug current shunt or not. If you pull the valve covers then "AB" should be the prefix of the identification number stamped on the solenoids for split shot injectors that all 1996-1997 Cal diesels have. Maybe you can learn something or not.

The rebuilders on ebay and other places rebuild your PCM, especially California ones, no one is making new ones. If you get lucky, the auto dismantlers are the only possible source for you.

And on that sobering note, don't forget this stuff:

Turbo Pedestal O-Rings (between pedestal & block; pedestal & turbo)
(Ford) F4TZ-6N653-A & F4TZ-6N653-B

Turbo Exhaust Inlet Gasket (between turbo inlet & collector)
(Ford) F4TZ-6N640-B
(International) 182210C1

You might want these also:

Turbo Exhaust Collector Donut (at top of each manifold-to-turbo up-pipe)
(Ford) F4TZ-6K854-C

Cheers!
