Help a noob with noise in turbo?

I've just recently bought a used 1999 F350 7.3L and it runs fine except for a small noise that I hear under load going up hill. The noise sounds similar to a old governor (buzzing). I've talked to a couple of people and they are saying that it's the bearing in my turbo. Is my truck going to explode? Please help, I bought this truck to pull my 21' Toyhauler.

thanks.

No mods. Just a stocker F350. I'm gonna search "surge".

Sleeper, THANKS.

Can you guys recommend any threads to read for a noob with a first power stroke? I'd like to get to know my truck and be able to do SOME work on it and know what's going on under the hood. I work on street bikes but never a Diesel motor.

You shouldn't have surge with a stock truck.

Could you give a better description of the noise? You could check the turbo for shaft play (in and out, top to bottom), and see if it is making contact with the housing.

Could even be the fan locking in....

Does it do it right off , or does it take a 30-sec or so to start the noise?

Any mods? Could be the exhaust rubbing something..

I changed out the boots on my intercooler tubes. Had a constant "buzz" when the boost hit 20psi under full throttle.

Tightened up the clamps and it went away.

Take a look for any cracks where the boost tubes connect to the intercooler and the upper intake Y-tube.

That'll be the cheaper problem to fix.

I can make it do it with the peddle but only under heavy load going up hill.

There's a sweet spot when I let off the peddle where it will make the sound.

If there's a surge issue, what are the next steps I should take in order to eliminate the sound?. . . .

Thanks for all of the reply's (serious or not)

I know for a fact that the air box is brand new BUT, when I bought the truck i realized that it had been in an accident where the front end was crashed in and re-built. I dunno if this helps or not. .. . . So you think it's surge for sure? Do you think I should just take it in to have it looked at?

What elevation do live at? Higher elevations will cause it to surge a lot more.

After listening to that video, it doesn't sound like the surge I've heard before. I'd pull the intake off and check the turbo for play. I didn't see on here where you had yet, so that might be worth a shot.

You don't have to pull the turbo to check for shaft play. Just unhook the intake hose that runs from your air filter to the turbo. Stick your hand in the turbo and grab the wheel and see if you can move it up and down and/or back and forth.

Pull of your intake boot(the 4'' to 3'' one)that goes onto the turbo housing and check your compressor wheel for movement (shaft play) side to side and in and out.

Depends on how bad the movemet is.You'll have alittle no matter what, just as long as the wheel aint rubbin the housing.
