Easier with auto or manual?

I have a 95 F superduty with the 5spd. Looking to do a cummins conv. and wondering if it is easier to do with the manual over the auto.

Manual will be easier for a few reasons, biggest one is unless you decide to go with a 47rh you'll need a controller of sorts for the tranny/converter. Another reason is you already have a manual in your truck from the get go so you won't be swapping parts. You might have to move the tranny back a hair depending how you set the Cummins in there. You never said your goals/plans on how much power your after & what the truck's planned use is but the ZF5 with a good clutch should be fine.

To be honest if your 7.3L is running fine right now I'd leave it in there for the power you desire. I think a set of stage 1s, intercooler, tunes, maybe do electric fuel & 17° HPOP. It's a nice power upgrade from a stock OBS without going too crazy or breaking the bank.

The 7.3 at this point is leaking a bit more oil then i care for but im thinking that is a sinple gally plug issue and will be gettin then in the morning from the dealer. Other than that its looking like the motor is in rather good shape. I was a service truck for a large fuel oil company local to the area so im thinking that it had some well kept maintence as well. So your thinkin just build the truck the way it is?

You will have more money into a cummins swap then into building up your 7.3 unless you get the stuff for free or dirt cheap. For 400hp you'll need a set of stage 2 injectors or a small hybrid, bigger turbo, bigger hpop and tuning for the setup. You'll need an aftermarket clutch to hold up to the added power to but you will for sure be under the $10,000 to do a cummins swap.

$10,000 is just a rough guess.

Did my 12v/zf6 conversion for about 7k. I say if you plan on keepin the truck for a long time it's definatley worth it but on the other hand if this truck will only be in your possession for a year or two just keep the 7.3 in it and enjoy a good motor and cheap parts.

I do plan on keeping the truck for a long time. I had an OBS truck before and sold it and have kicked myself every sence. I know that with the swap the last time that i priced one out with was for a truck with an auto in it and things got very pricy in a big hurry. I know that between a complete motor and adapter plate im looking at about 15-1600 and if i add morot mounts into that instead of making them im looking at about 2100 total. I know that im going to want to intercool it and i can do that with amking my own piping and buyin a OEM intercooler for about 250 or so. I know there are a few other things that im missing like clutch, starter, and the add ons for the cummins to make good power but im thinking i might hit about 6500-6700 and it sound to be worth it to me. Plus there arent a lot a guys around here with a fummins let alone a fummins Fsuper duty so in that hand the cool factor goes way up for me. Any thoughts or am i missing some other parts that i looked over that will set me back some big $$$ ?

With the money you plan on spending on the swap you could build a easy 400 HP. And you have to remember that 7500$ for a Cummings swap is just gonna get you a STOCK 12v, if your not going for big numbers I would build what you have.

Did some lookin around last night in regards to this oil leak and im thinking that its not going to be just an easy plug issue. So at this point the swap is looking better and better. The other thing is I know alot more about gettin power out of a cummins and dont know too much about pstroke performance other than injectors, intake, exhaust, tuner. Mainly just concerned that the motor may not be as mechanicly sound as I think.

Clean it all up in the valley and then start it up and see if you can find the leak. In the back of the valley is a drain hole that drains fluids down the back of the block.

You may just have a hpo line that is leaking....

I will still say it will be cheaper for you to mod your powerstroke then it will to do a cummins swap.

Well if i get this leak taken care of pending i can find it can someone give me a quick run down on the best mods to do to the truck. basically looking to see how you would go about moding the engine with first mod to last. And yes i kinow there is a search function and i can look it up, and trust me i have looked around but i dont know from all the reading what parts are a waste of $$ and what parts complement others. This will be a huge help in the decision to swap or not that way i can really dial-in my prices and weight the choises.

1.Turbo back exhaust, at least a 3" dp.....after that you can do whatever you want.
2.Gauges. Most important is pyro, since you have a 5spd I would do a fuel psi gauge for if and when you do e-fuel and also install a boost gauge.
3. Intake. Weather its a simple diy setup or a tymar do ont go with a k&n drop in filter.
4. Stronger clutch. Im not a 5spd guy so I dont know where to point you on that.
5. Chip. Alot of on here run a TS style chip with custom tune on here. Some are running DP tuner.
6. Injectors. You will here the names Cass and fullforce alot, Cass owns fullforce and he has a network of dealers such as Complete performance, Beans diesel and a few other. Swamps is another great place for injectors.
7. HPOP. For that I would suggest stealth, they just released the srp1 which seems to be on every 7.3 owners wish list.
8. Turbo. Depending on what you do for fuel side will depends on what ya do here.
9. Intercooler. Alot of obs owners either do a diy setup using a SD intercooler or they have installed a banks intercooler.

I hope this little list helps.

Yeah that list def. helped alot. I knew that off the get go i was going to have to incleace the flow both in and out. I did a temp exhaust on the truck and made my own cat style single stack because i believe that the exhaust was hacked off the truck before it was delivered to me and all i was left with was a dp. I have looked into getting a sd intercooler and spyder but i dont know the full detailes of what i would need for that all to come together or even in that spyder will work on factory/hybrid turbo for now. As for gauges i have a pillar pod already on the way with all the gauges that u mentioned getting sent with it. I know from haveing lots of past diesels that watching whats going on is huge. Now as for chips, i have been doing some reading of styles between ts style and types like the dp tuner and have heard ups and downs about both what are your thoughts there? Ive also read the great write-up on e-fuel and i know it dosent look too bad just finding all the parts looks consooming. For injectors and thoughts on DIYs i have done some reading up on them in the past and im looking for some feedback as to weather its worth my time? For intake ill end up making my own and if it comes out as good as the halfa**ed stack i did i think ill go with it. Now for HPOP is it true that you can run one off a 99-up sd and it will preform better then 98-down ones or am i better off just going with a stealth?

I still think that an intercooler, stage 1s, clutch, tunes, maybe E-fuel & a HPOP upgrade would make a nice setup for your 450 without going crazy. That should put you somewhere around 300hp maybe more, every truck is a little different. I'll can help you out & get you setup with whatever you need.

The only other thing is i daily drive my '09 3500 D-max so i really could just totally drop the bar and go nutz with this truck if i wanted. Im just worried that this is going to be like building a 24v cummins with a vp-pump to make power when there are guys out there spend half the money on a 12v with a p-pump and making the same power. I know that if i put a good clutch in the truck it will hold but im just conserned that spending the $$ on the pstroke is going to get me more power but with less room to grow then the cummins without spending alot more $$

Well i give a big thanks to everyone for all of the info on everything, i can honestly say that im off the fence and am goin to stick with what i got and make it happen. I was thinking about it and around here you dont see too many nice OBS truck that are making some good power numbers. Im staying with the stroker. thanks again

Well, ive gor another little twist with my F super. Im lookin for a little input on what im gettin myself into. I purchaseda 94 F150 that is almost identical to the 95, meaning both are 2wd both are stick. Basically the same truck just one diesel and heavier chassis. So u might be able to tell where im headed with this..... The 450 body is a lot ruff, so im thinkin that motor and trans would be a sweet treat in the mint underpowered 150. Ive done alot of readin into it, Im just lookin for some input to make suree im not lookin over somethin

Guess I could update things on this thread. I ended up doing the motor swap into the F150 with a a few go fast parts and well it came out great and ran very strong for a few weeks. Now the motor is out and a 96 12v is sitting in it place. Im ordering the adpt plate this week and clutch. Hope to have my fummins shorty back on the road before the end of the month.
