DPF delete / tuner / what?

There's no sticky on this and searching gave me more questions than answers. I can infer doing this delete is desirable as it puts a little more control of combustion back in the hands of a human. I also now know that you should not delete the DPF (function? physical can along framerail? computer code?) without this tunes/tuner thing. Can someone point me in the right direction for finding guidance on performing this modification? My 08 has 25k on it (I hate it that much) and would do anything to make it snappier than my sister's Vespa.

Thanx

For the 6.4 spartan and h&s tuners are the way to go. You can get a down pipe back dpf delete 5" exhaust from mkm/sinister diesel for 299 + shipping comes out to like 340. Spartan and h&s tuners are high as he'll so I would suggest a used one the spartan is my personal preference the have a +350hp tune you want your 6.4 pushing 700hp don't you?

So 'tuning' means replacing stock exhaust with aftermarket which will either resaonate or have different back pressure characteristics that will increase airflow? I thought 'tuning' meant somehow using a program to change computer settings.

What does 'delete' mean then? Physical removal of the can along the frame rail? What about sensor nonsense and the 'heat tube' coming from the turbo? Less than $400 is nothing if it means the thing will be able to get out of it's own way. I can't stress the word 'garbage' enough when I use it to describe my feelings towards this $50k paperweight.

You are getting rid of the dpf. The dp back exhaust will operate her up and will sound great they have YouTube videos you can watch. The tuner will give the capibiltiy to tell the computer that it is ok to run without the dpf /egr and other emission equipment that kill your power and fuel mileage. It will cost you about 1200/2000 dollars to remove the dpf and get a spartan tuner depending on new or used equipment. This will make you smile I promise!

So it seems this is a necessary evil... Does it go flange to flange or do I have to MIG it together? Also, I need the pipe as well as the computer tuner doohickey? Can't do one without the other rite? I think I remember reading on here that it won't run or will run once or something if you do the pipe and don't have the interface.

I really want to smile over this truck.

Everything I find in a Google search is in the $2k range for what doesn't look like much plumbing. I refuse to spend that much more on this hunk of $h**.

Are any of the PDA size computer interfaces worth anything? A friend has one he said cost him $800 and he said it gives him crazy fuel mileage (I'm at 8.5, yay for my 6.4) and no loss of power.

Watch this it's the 299 exhaust

The exhaust is down pipe back, pretty easy install. You have to do them at the same time the exhaust deletes the dpf. The tuner does the computer part and adds another 350 hp

I believe if you get rid of the cat and delete and get a tuner, even if you run a mild tune, you will be impressed. There is a used SCT 9625OR on Craig'slist Austin and it says make offer. If you buy used make sure to ask about how many trucks it has been installed on in the past because they only have 3 or 4 unlocks on them. The one for sale says make offer. I think it would be worth buying if you could get it for 350-450 if it has unlocks left on it. It will also allow you to install custom tunes on it later. This particular model will allow you to delete dpf and egr if you keep the stock egr valve in place. If you want to remove the stock egr valve and intake elbow you will have to get a custom tune. I run this exact set up. Seems to be running much better now.

Smarty Tuner by MADS S-67 ME

Is this worth $900? Says it's the one 'no longer available in the U.S.'

Isn't there an all-in-one kit that gets rid of all the garbage and lets the poor thing breathe? I guess I mean EGR as well as DPF in one box. And then throw in a little brain box as well. My buddy has one and he can see and reset trouble codes as he's driving down the road (It's an '00 7.3). The fuel mileage increase alone would be worth the money to me...

That was fast! The sct will never put out the power that a spartan will anyway, everyone know every time your truck goes in the shop it's $2000 bucks min lol

Mr. Andy- H&S is considered by most to be the top of the line from what I can tell. But, you're going to pay for that as well. Was too rich for my blood, so I went with the SCT Livewire TS 5015 (I've used the SCT X3 in the past and familiar with the brand) and payed $900 total with tuning from Punchit Performance (received it next day air as well). I bought my 4" CAT/DPF delete pipe from Rudy's for $219. All things considered, fairly cheap and a truly noticeable terrific upgrade. The Livewire gives me real-time telemetry of the truck's internals: oil temp, exhaust back pressure, EGTs, etc., but does not allow "on the fly" tuning like the H&S, so if I want to change my tune (I have 10), then I have to stop, turn off the motor and change the tune. But, those are preference/wallet dependent. I'm pretty new to the 6.4, emission crap, this forum etc., but very familiar with the old 7.3 that I had years ago. That's just my experience and thought I'd share so you're aware of your options.

Deleting the CAT/DPF is pretty simple... You just have to be able to get under the truck. Lots of youtube vids on CAT/DPF delete pipe installations.

First off, THANK YOU to the community of Ford owners that have guided and informed me thus far, I can only imagine how many untold tens if not hundreds of thousands of dollars has been spared $10, $100, $1000+ at a time from simple hints to major decision changers thanks to the helpful guidance of fellow enthusiasts. That said...

I've got almost everything penciled in for my garage bay overhaul of my '08 350. Rudy's seems to be the best game going for the plumbing end of things - 5" down tube back DPF delete ($379) & EGR delete with intercooler elbow ($249) but as I'm still not fully educated on the tuner end of things, I don't know if they pooped the bed or not.. They advertise an SCT 5015 for $999 and this know it all blowhard (I'm sure others were rubbed the same way by "Mr. E") told me that theirs is the only one that works as follows: It has 5 tunes for 50, 100, 150, 200, and 250hp gains. I took it for what I was hearing as I was more preoccupied with trying to figure out how I could squeeze myself into the telephone wire and plop myself out in North Carolina in front of this arrogant prick but thats another pipedream.... Anyway, as I'm listening to him stroke himself off I'm Googling 'SCT 5015 6.4 Ford' and I came up with a pile of other retailers ranging form $599 to upwards of $2k+ as part of various kits. Anyway, I inquired what the difference was between his and everyone else's other than the obvious $400. He told me in a nutshell that they wont do what his product will. I very well may have fallen off the turnip truck but I guarantee you it wasn't last nite, so something doesn't add up. I understand these 'tunes' are the meat and potatoes of how the tuner will act or perform, and I'm guessing individual tunes are proprietary items that simply use that SCT device as an interface?

Help me out here fellas, my question is how much difference can there be in an item when one retailer offers said item for $599 and another the identical item for $999?

As stated previously, I'm thinking Rudy's has my money for the delete portion of this horrendous experiment, but I'm lost as to what this friggin video game tuner doohickey thing is all about.

:bowfast:

Caveat to our previous conversation: Be careful which SCT Livewire you're looking at: They have the 5015 for the "Off-road/Race" and then there's the Livewire "Street Performance" version. You will technically need the Off-road/Race (aka competition) Livewire version: That's the $900-1000 version as opposed to $500-600 version. My understanding is that the difference is for licensing purposes. That is the version that comes with DPF/EGR delete tunes, and that is what you will DEFINITELY need.
I bought mine from Punch-It Performance for $899 as opposed to the $999 from Rudy's and everyone else. You will get the same Livewire with the same 5 preloaded tunes: Tow, Street, Performance, Extreme Performance, and Race. Pick which one you want and go.
Hope that helps.

Ahhh I see, so they have you by the short hairs - I guess that would be a legality / EPA thing because 'Race' vehicles dont have to conform to highway / emissions rules and therefore would be the only vehicles that (ahem ahem) wouldnt have a DPF or EGR setup on them. Unlike the 'street performance' series, well, right there in the name is the word 'street' thus implying 100% conformity to Tree hugger rules. Bastards!

The stock downpipe is 4" OD, but more like 3" ID due to it's double wall and the fact that it's slightly crushed in places for clearance purposes.

A 5" turbo-back exhaust will have a 4" downpipe, then flare to 5" once it gets under the truck.

A 5" downpipe-back exhaust will have a 4" entrance, then flare out to 5".

Basically, you'll always have a 4" downpipe.

Get the 5" exhaust, you won't regret it.

So I checked out quite a few youtube vids and googled everything I could think of... This EGR delete looks like 2 block off plates and 2 coolant plugs eliminates about 50lbs worth of junk emissions scrap metal from under the hood... The cooler alone looks like it's quite a bit of fun to get to the lower end of and remove... Does all this get tossed with the (on average) $250 delete kit and elbow?
