DPF Delete/Tuner Question

First off, if this question is redundant and there is a thread that I should read regarding this, my apologies!

I just purchased an '08 F250 6.4L 2WD, completely stock, for towing my family's new travel trailer. But more importantly, it will be used as my daily driver as well. This is my first diesel and so far the thing has been a blast to drive, but she is pretty thirsty on the fuel consumption.

I'm on a pretty tight budget and looking for options to get some better MPG and at the advice of a friend, I bought a DPF delete pipe with the bung to reinstall the EGT sensor (just the DPF, not the CAT), along with a tuner. However, as much reading as I thought I did, I guess it wasn't enough. My fault as a newb. The tuner chip I purchased (Superchips Flashpaq 1855) does not support any kind of regen disable. Again, budget is tight, Ive read good things about SCT.. but all of the really awesome tuners (Spartan and such) are just not doable for me cost-wise, unfortunately.

My question.. should I just forget about the delete pipe and just use the tuner by itself? Should I return the tuner and get something else affordable that supports the regen disable? I'm not looking at all to put this thing into "Beast Mode" or anything. And I'm not the biggest fan of the whole rolling coal idea. I see guys all over town doing it, and here in FL we have no annual emissions test. I don't think I'd be hassled about it, but still not a fan.

But in addition to some added MPGs, and supposed better shift points I've heard that the delete is actually good for the longevity of the enigine, as far as more frequent oil changes for fuel in the oil and other aspects of added wear on some of the engine components. I would sacrifice blowing come carbon for the health of the motor.

Advice would be absolutely appreciated. Sorry for the long post but I'm a little lost and just not sure which way to go... Thanks much!!

Delete everything. Cat, dpf, muffler, egr. If you go sct youll need custom tunes which brings the price of that up.

I'm sure you could find a used tuner.

Thanks for that info, Spence.
I've seen all kinds of combinations of answers as to what to delete. Was looking for a little more "why" information as well if you or someone can provide. Deleting the whole system from the cat on back, muffler included, is going make a big nasty and LOUD machine, no? And getting rid of the egr would require some kind of tuner with real time monitoring, would it not? To be on the safe side?

There are many reasons to delete everything. Getting rid of the dpf and regen will eliminate the fuel dilutuon in the oil that results from it. Also it'll help increase fuel economy and longevity. Back pressure on a diesel is not necessary and only creates more wear on the internals.

As for the egr it will help with power, mpgs and reliability as well. Both the dpf and egr coolers are known to fail. On these trucks the egr is a little more reliable than the 6.0s though. When the egr and DPF fail they are expensive fixes.

The cat and muffler are just more or less about creating a free flowing exhaust. 6.4s are not very loud at all even when straight piped so it's nothing I'd worry about. If you wanted you could use a muffler but cats are junk.

Not a problem. There are some other reasons why to do the deletes but those are the basics.

And about the tuner I wouldn't recommend skimping. For one you can't buy an sct with canned tunes that do deletes any longer. You'll have to go custom. If you go sct I'd recomend the livewire or an additional monitoring device like the edge. I don't like my livewire guages personally. But you want to be able to watch your Temps, egts, fuel rail pressure ect. A livewire new with custom tunes is almost a grand.

I know the initial cost of a spartan can seem overwhelming but it could save you a lot of hassle in the long run and give you peace of mind that you have the best tuning trans and engine wise you can get. There is a reason why it's so expensive but people still go with them. Just my 2 cents on that subject and I know we all have different budgets and a $1500 tuner is not workable into many.

This might be the way to go.

Wackyman9 has a good method too but the minimax is a good tuner.

I just put a DPF-R 4.0 in with a canned x4 as a babysitter. I couldn't be happier. The Flo-Pro pipe with the DPF/CAT delete and bungs with the DPF-R 4.0 shipped for 565.. And I did it on my back in my driveway in 2 hours.. Here's the catch with this method though.... All the sensors must be plugged in when using the DPF-R 4.0 including the EGR valve.. So if you plan on doing the EGR delete, as you should, you may have to trick the EGR sensor, or just use block off plates and not a high flow elbow.. On a side note, the truck sounds amazing, and my back pressure dropped 5 barometers!

I used dales super store. I called them directly and had them build a package, saved about 35 bucks and had everything shipped to me direct from Flo-Pro and GearBoxZ in about 5 days.

Just don't forget that if your using the DPF-R ALL of the exhaust sensors and egr valve sensors must be plugged in! Good luck!

The x4 supports custom tuning though. If he buys a canned X4, would he be able to purchase a DPF and egr delete tune and download it into the tuner?
