DI regulator shim kit vs DI regulated return

I've been reading about these two things on DI's website and from what i can tell there isnt alot of difference between the two except that the return kit feeds the back of the heads also giving you more balanced fuel flow. It also alows you to reach pressures up to 75 psi. However, you can do the same with the shim kit, increase it from 5psi to 25 psi over stock. CSIPSD on here is running a factory fuel system with only this mod, and is feeding stage III hybrids like this. So my question is, why spend the 450$ on the return kit when you can spend so much less on the shim kit?? All comments welcome

Your right I am running the stock fuel system, but with the hybrids and a Fass, and a regulated return I would pick up about 30hp... I can drop the Fuel pressure from 68 to 20 or less on the hottest setting...

The stage 2's would drop to about 55 or so. If you can afford the fuel system, do it! If not you will be fine.

I am in the process of building my fuel system, and was working on it when the motor blew... so...

I'm just trying to see how big the gains are for the extra 400$+...i really wanted to spend my money on other things right now, like your injectors LOL

LOL I feel ya... thats one of the reasons I never bought a fuel system... ITP's Fuel bowl delete kit is what I am shooting for now, I have the parts, just need the fuel line, and some fittings and some time...LOL

I just installed a reg return.....

I have been very happy with the results.... The truck runs stronger, smoother, and WAY less engine noise...

I believe you will also find that DI doesn't offer the shim kit anymore either.... Its still on their site but I believe that its no longer offered

So it seems like there is fairly miminal gains to spending the extra 400+ on the reg return and the fass on top of that on the regulated return/fass. Thats seems like well spent money!

You can do the same thing with a 4-40 allen head screw... thats what I did and just kept grinding it down until I got it where I wanted it...

I'll tell you something, I just built my own system and I have about 450 in it, and still have the stock fuel bowl....

For another 100 I can get the bowl delete from Dennis, and I will have exactly what he charges for the full kit in mine: $550.

I am a DIY type of guy and do everything I can that way, but on the fuel system I would NEVER recommend DIY.

I spent the same amt of money and all the added headache, trial and error, and multiple trips to the hardware / IH dealer were NOT worth it.

Buy the kit from Dennis or DI, you have good quality parts, good instructions, and can do it all in one sitting.

Not a bad idea... but I can get most of the parts for FREE... and really want all the lines to be hard lines, and no one makes a kit with hard lines...

We don't offer the shim kit anymore but we do offer a stage 1 fuel kit which is basically the regulator portion of the regulated return kit. The benefits over the shim kit are easier installation and infinite adjustability, Then later if you decide to go the full system you just buy the hose kit.

If you think you might want the entire system don't hesitate to call and make an offer;)

David, how does this stage 1 kit mount to the fuel bowl and whats the price?

PM returned! YA need some pic's up David...

#29 ·
David,

is your reg. return built with the blue hoses like the pic or braided? Thought maybe it was an old pic...

i prefer braided. tougher, looks better. no problems or leaks here.
Have you ever played with or held a piece of 221FR hose?
as far as toughness goes take a torch to a piece of braided SS hose and tell me how long it takes to ruin it!!
Now do the same with 221FR!!!

HINT Braided SS hose does not have a coast guard approval for use as fuel line on ocean going vessels;)

More of an experiment... trial and error...lol

Man... Its been three years... It was a bolt... I think I ground it down to the point that the allen part is almost gone... But again... 3 years ago

David, i think instead of shimming it i will probably get your regulated return system. It seems like a better option and will hold up to my fuel demands with the setup in mind (stage 2 injectors, TN BB or 38R)
