This morning the CEL came on at startup, but everything sounded OK, then went off after I left the driveway...fine all the way to work. Tonight CEL came on again, noticed i was low on oil, topped off, but CEL still came on. Engine ran fine, but shifted hard...halfway home CEL shut off and everything went back to okey dokey. Later tonight did the CEL/hard shifting thing again...reset computer, but that didn't help

And I don't have easy access to a scanner, so was just hoping for some "this done happened to me..." responses before I go on the search for a scanner.

And I do have a buncha spare parts in addition to another PSD truck, so guess/check ain't out of the question, just wanna do some edumacated guessin n checkin

At this point I'm just looking for guesses...Was same thing this morning...CEL came on at startup, let it get nice and warm before I left though, and after about 10 miles CEL turned off and went back to normal

I did some searching, but everyone I found with a CEL had some issues with their engine, I was just wondering if anyone had any similar problems that they'd like to share

I have recently been questioning the integrity of my baro and map sensors, and IPR, maybe PSOM. I have had the trans act like this before, but this is the first time I've had a CEL

Get out your phone book or go online to see if there are any performance shops near you. Don't just throw parts at it. You may replace an expensive part that otherwise didn't need to be replaced. All that a shop would need to do is use a scan tool to scan it for the p-codes. If you know anyone with a hand held programmer or the like will be able to scan the codes for you.

On the other hand, My guess would be Glow plugs. That just my $.02. Unfortunately, the diagnostics may not show up as glow plugs given the year of your truck. Some OBS PCM's lacked some diagnostic information. However there is a way to check the resistance on the glow plugs. Google search will help with that procedure, unless and OBS guy can chime in with that document.

Was the OD light blinking ? if so it could be a P0500 code which is the VSS on the rear end...you should scan it to be sure as others have stated......

My truck threw a code for low system voltage one time and it set the CEL and started shifting hard. Until you find out what the code is, your going to get 100 different problems and 100 different solutions that is going to cost you a fortune to try new sensors and the like. All I'm sayin is, Find the nearest Ford Dealer if you have to and get it scanned.

Check your ICP sensor. If it goes bad (or the wiring/connector is bad) it will toss a CEL and the trans will shift hard.

OK, i'll check ICP tonight...had to help the GF move last night :-(

To answer the other question, no OD light flash, and I have new GPs, GPR, VSS, and rebuilt* trans about a year ago. I have a Bronco-PSD project truck that's currently disassembled, so lots of parts from that laying around, in addition to another 96 f350 psd that's complete (but stored at a friends house). So I have no intentions of throwing expensive parts at it...but swapping used parts around usually isn't a big deal to help me diagnose

But no problems this morning, so we'll see. Thanks yall

well gawldang, it is possible to fix one of these things without a scanner :D

Yall was right, ICP sensor. there was no change when unplugged, but worked fine when I swapped the sensor out
