ccv mod question

I recently did the ccv mod to my 97 7.3. I'm happy with the mod except for the small but constant smoke coming from my dump tube from under my truck not to mention the awful smell. I've heard that some have found a way to tie the dump tube into the exhaust to eliminate the drippings and smell but when I thought about it I realized that hooking into the exhaust would draw a vacuum on the new dump tube.. But then again there must be a vacuum drawn with the factory design since once the turbo spools it would also draw a vacuum, probably more of a vacuum than welding a fitting on the side of my exhaust pipe and connecting the dump line would. (Welding a fitting on the side of my exhaust pipe, right after the down pipe and connecting the dump tube would draw a vacuum and not create positive pressure blowing back into the ccv vent right???) Would a vacuum be a good or bad thing? I wonder if international or ford even thought about the vacuum drawn on the crank case vent having the OEM design?? Would any of you think it's better to have the system run with a vacuum of any amount on the ccv system or without a vacuum and just let it dump out by itself? I'd much rather get rid of the smoke and the aroma altogether but I don't want to fill my turbo with anything but clean, sludge free air.

I would think that the exhaust would make some back pressure, i did the same mod myself and i am happy with it, i dont notice much vapor and only get a whiff of it once in a while. i kinda like the smell anyway lol.

The "t444e" (internationals medium truck version of the 7.3) had the crank case just vented to the atmosphere. Just leave it like it is and drive your truck. If the smell of ccv bothers you, well, I dont think you belong driving a diesel in the first place

Well.. The truck has 240k on it, and I've only personally put about 5-6k on it since I bought it. Anyways, it does have a small amount of blow by, not enough to blow an upside down oil cap off when laying on top of oil fill. But.. It does always have a smoke cloud around it when running just enough that it looks as though it's a pile of crap that has the small amount of smoke coming between the gaps of the fender and the hood. So... It's more than just "I don't like the smell" but I take pride in my truck and prefer that it doesn't look like a pile of crap and the smell isn't pleasing. I don't care how awesome your truck looks or powerful it is.. If it has a smelly smoke cloud around it im not going to be as impressed with it

I'm with nomorescooby, I did that mod years ago and I had low miles, but in traffic at night you could see the ccv gasses and smoke in the headlights of the vehicle behind you, and it smelled like crap.

I got a deal on a racor 4500. It's to big to go under hood so it is on the frame rail. The ccv return goes back to the stock position on the intake. I just have to drain the can at every oil change, gets about 1/8 full. I beleive the model 3500 will fit under hood and then the can would be able to gravity feed back into the crankcase.

had a question about this crank case ventilation issue. know this is an older thread but here goes.

Instead of putting tube from top of valve cover under truck out back instead of into the intake hose, how about putting a hose into side of filter housing..

that way you don't crud up turbo blades with raw oilish stuff and you don't have to worry about the smell around truck when running some have mentioned after doing this mod.

I remember a truck that had the PVC hose go into a fiberglass filter type thing that was installed in bottom of filter housing on far end, away from intake horn area under the filter. It was made to be replaced when you replace air filter or at least you check it and replace as needed.

does that sound like a good? way to do this mod.

just spitballing here. :poke:

If you ran it into the filter you would demolish your filter with that oilish crud in no time at all. I made my own ccv can out of some pvc fittings coat me like 6 bucks total and it's under the hood and feeds off the dog house into the can and back to the intake tube. I drain it every oil change and it works very well. I couldn't get myself to spend that kind of money there asking for those kits when with a little weekend time and a little work the same thing can be had for under 10 bucks. I can send you a couple pics of my ccv can if your interested

This is the one I made before I got a Raycor for free. Easy to do and mine never smoked.

Awesome, what material did you use inside for the filtering?

Stainless steel kitchen scrubbers. Some guys use plastic ones but not all plastics stand up to hot oil fumes.

Sweet, yeah the raycor looked like around $250.
Nice idea!
