Hey all, I know this has probably been answers hundreds of times, but I'm looking at an 08 f250 6.4 that's deleted and chipped with 194k miles or 297k kilometers. The truck is fairly low priced but how long do these engine last if maintained good?

Yea right? Your telling me you can't get 300k out of a deleted & programmed 6.4?

Seems like every 6.4 is a ticking time bombs just set with different detonation timers from factory?

#6 ·
Well maybe in a few more years ill be able to get one.

Id buy a higher mileage truck as if its ran that long then it should be golden

I've run across a few with higher km/miles than that, but it seems the company owned ones actually do better than the personal grocery getter 6.4 trucks.
The 6.4 likes to be ridden hard and put away wet so to speak.
Trucks that guys baby and try to take care of seem to be the ones that crap the bed early lol,

What I'm saying is I don't mind higher mileage vehicles if they are maintained cause you can get them cheaper. Look for me buying a new truck is out of the question even I did have the money I wouldn't spend it on a truck I'd buy a house

The most consistent thread I've seen around here seems to be in maintenance: Generally speaking (ahem, Mr. Andy's lemoncake aside), if these beasts are stringently maintained, they seem to last longer/have fewer issues. Those are higher miles with that truck, but if the guy has bone clean records to go with it, I'd say jump. The other question I'd ask is what were/are the nature of those miles? If it was short track racing every weekend with lots o' towing during the week- NO. Long interstate and highway miles- Good to go. That's hyperbole, but I think you get the drift.

That being said, you probably would be looking at a new engine in at least 50k. But, average what you think your mileage is going to be, figure 12-15K for a longblock replacement, and see if it economically makes sense. If you need the diesel, and it's cheap, buy it and start saving for the new engine the day you sign the papers. *Might* be cheaper than the other options out there. JUST BE CHOOSY and don't just jump at the cheapest thing coming down the line. You can beat the crap outta these trucks and they hold up with a huge exception: the 6.4. JMHO.

I don't see why 6.4s are that bad. I mean issues yes but nothing that shouldnt be fixable

#19 ·
Anythings fixable, just better have deep deep pockets with a 6.4

#21 ·
dont be afraid of a high miler.. just pay close attention to it and look closely.

It always seems that the guys bashing the 6.4's are the ones that own or owned the 6.0's and its like some sick and twisted payback for all the crap they had to endure from everyone. These are work trucks. Not race cars. And the damn emissions nonsense is a killer. And just like everything else it's all about maintenance.

I never owned one but I fix them every week and at the same time my opinion comes from only seeing the broken ones. My opinion is that these are some of the most costly to repair and most difficult to repair. I think its ridiculous to have to pull the cab for many of the repairs. Down pipe was a bad design, the up pipes are a pain to get off, the rockers wear and break really easily, thermostats go bad all the time, egr valves are a pain to change without breaking off, lower fuel filter is harder to get to than on the 6.0, front covers and bed plates like to leak oil, high pressure pump is known to come apart and the wires to it can rub and short out causing a no start. Have to remove cab for fuel system/ high pressure pump job, head gasket job, engine swap, turbo swap, oil cooler job. They all have their issues and weaknesses but in my opinion 7.3, 6.0, and 6.7 are far better choices.

Ive had mine for a while now and I've made it to 225000 with no MAJOR issues. I had an egr cooler go down and had my downpipe break off but still is a solid truck. Some must be luckier than others I guess.

Ours is just about to hit 260,000. We bought it cheap with a broken rocker arm. Replaced all rockers on that side and its been pretty solid since. We did have one issue with the fuel tank letting air in the pickup line. Otherwise so far so good.

It was a service rig before we got it. Maintence records on it from the time it had 14 miles on it. We change oil (rotella/motkrcraft) @ 3000 and fuel filters(motorcraft) at 5000 running zerex geo 5 coolant flushed every year. (we havent had it a year yet, thats what they did when they owned it)
Bone stock it pulls like a freight train and once in a while i'll smoke the tires a little, because i can.

2010 Company truck, all stock 6.4, 149,000miles, broken rocker arm and cab off to change hi psi fuel pump as well.

2008 Harley truck, deleted and road hard, friends, spun bearing at 151,000 miles. Ford shortblock and labor, $11,000 and going strong again.

2009 company truck, all stock, stuck injector, smoked shortblock, 96,000miles.

Ive seen 2008s with 200,000 miles all stock, no major repairs as well, but they were all hiway long distance miles.

Just examples Ive personally seen. The 6.4 imo, probly the most powerful diesel with just add ons, but one of the most

expensive to repair.
