I have a 1996 Ford F250 diesel. I recently put in a new alternator and a starter relay due to prior charging issues. It initially seemed to fix the problem, but I noticed after the second time I started the truck the alternator gauge was not reading the proper amperage. I went back and cleaned all connections and it worked properly again (gauge was showing correct amperage). After the second or third start, the gauge went back to reading in the 12-amp range again. So, I thought that maybe my gauge was faulty. I tapped the top of the dash, above the gauge, and mysteriously the gauge went to its correct position and the truck is back to reading 14 amps. Does this suggest that I have a bad gauge or connection to the dash or am I out in left field thinking this way? Also, I did take the new alternator out of the truck and back to the shop and had it tested and the test was good. One more thing, I replaced all the dash lights with leds. They seem to work fine. All other gauges are working fine.
