6.0 to 7.3 Conversion

I have a 2003 F-250 with an auto trans and a sick 6.0. I also have a 2000 7.3 with an auto trans that is wrecked with 114,000 miles on it. I want to put the 7.3 out of the 2000 into the 2003 with the 6.0. Has any body ever done this? Can you give me some direction?

I've got a guy wanting me to do a similar conversion. He has his '99 7.3L 6 speed that he totaled(That I just built an engine for with headstuds, swamps injectors, new clutch, etc) and wants to use the engine and transmission in an '03 6.0 auto truck he just bought.

Anyone have experience with this? Hope going to the 'dumb' transmission will make things go a little smoother but I know that the center 'hump' in the cab is different from an auto to a 6 speed.

As long as you have the complete donor it will be plug and play. On my Bronco I had to swap out the dash and engine harness along with both fuse box's, but the existing chassis harness and most of the interior plugs worked. Going from one diesel to the next you will probably have a lot less to swap than I did. Dash harness will likely be the same, you may just need to swap the engine harness, which is pretty simple.

As for the dumb transmission, I remember seeing one conversion where the guy cut the transmission hump out of the donor and grafted it into his truck.

Looking to do the same thing with mine. Have a fully built 7.3 in a rolled truck, engine wasn't hurt and neither was I thank god. Looking at buying a like-bodied 03 or 04 king ranch or harley edition and swapping out the 6.0 and 5r100 for a 7.3 and bts 4r100. Kept the truck so I still have all the wiring harness, cluster, etc. Even if I end up buying another 7.3 the engine is going to come out for the built one so the labor part of it shouldn't be much more intensive....I hope. Exactly what all would have to be swapped over??

In '02 they changed the instrument cluster, and the power distribution was all moved to one fuse panel under the dash. The 2000 harnesses/power distribution will be completely different from the '03. The 02 and later cluster needs an 02 and later 7.3 PCM/related wiring for the WTS/WIF lights to operate correctly. You'll be able to swap in the 7.3 but probably need a 02-03 7.3 engine harness and PCM to avoid having to rewire the entire truck.

What about swapping a 6.0 in a 03 or 04 for a 02 7.3? Have a complete running donor truck, body is just shot. I'm sure the pcm, idm, cluster, and all engine harnesses will have to be changed but idk about the compatibility of the rest of the harness.

i did a 7.3l 6 speed swap from a 5.4l auto gas engine in my 99 f250... the interior wiring harness unplugged to the left of the steering column and then the tail lite wiring harness stayied it also has the plug for the sending unit.... the rest of the harness had to come out...... i can not recall on the newer trucks if the wiring harness still unplugs by the steering colum or not.... it takes some time but it is not all too bad if you like turning wrenches... just use all the parts from the donar truck and it will be pretty easy... i wish i had that at my hands when i did mine..... i can tell you this though the more you think about it the harder it seems.... once i jumped into it it wa not all that bad really... good luck...

Just joined the forum so I'm sure my question has been asked or I'm posting in the wrong spot, but I can't find the exact answer. Just bought a 2003 Excursion w/a 6.0 Diesel as a project truck. I wasn't aware of the 6.0 issues until it started breaking left and right.
My questions:
1) Can a 7.3 be swapped into a 6.0 frame without changing the mounts or structure of the engine compartment? I understand I need to change the harness etc. but just want to make sure it will physically fit and be able to be worked on?
2) Had never thought of putting a Cummins in it b/c just seems like could be a future "Ford truck to Dodge parts" problem. What would be the more reliable/ easier to "fix in the future" option?
Thanks for all opinions before I spend a lot of capital in the wrong direction...

Living in the rust belt. I have a nice 95 crew cab. Body is great but failed NH inspection for rusty radiator support. I was offered a rust free radiator support from a 96 but it is shorter. Trying to save a few bucks and get this truck passed but will I be able to bolt enough in to make it worth the effort?
