Hi Guys,
I'm buying my father in laws 2002 7.3 250 hp , automatic, 4x4 crew cab and want to up the game for towing my race car/ 24' enclosed trailer set up, which weight adds up fast with GTO, fuel, golf cart, gear, etc.

I currently have a 97 225hp 7.3, manual, with a pin style edge programmer, 3" down pipe and a K&N filter. The old girl has done good but when we hit the grades she lugs down pretty good slowing to 50mph and have to hold firm in 4th gear till we clear some of the bigger hills like Hwy 40 Williams, Arizona.

What are the best performance upgrades I can do to the 2002 ? (bang for the buck) Brands, any personal experience. I was reading reviews on some of the Bully Dog and 500.00 Edge programmers and that's why I'm asking you guys for your input. The reviews are all over the board and I don't want to smoke $300.00-500.00 for something that's trouble right out of the box.

*Air filter/ Cold Air Intake
*Programmer
*Down Pipe
*Exhaust
Thanks, Dil Brandow

No edge or bullydog on 7.3s

Air filter: look up DIY intake (6637 napa filter)
Programmer: custom tuned 6 position chip. Tony Wildman, Dyno Proven, Gearhead, PHP etc.
Exhaust: MBRP/silver line. Or whoever has a good price for 4" exhaust

I also recommend a 6.0 Trans cooler and a full set of quality gauges.

For intake, I prefer the S&B kit. It cannot be beat for the price. I run it on my personal rig. LINK

For exhaust, I am a fan of MBRP. They fit well, use quality materials, and the price is right too. LINK

For tuner, we have many different options. It is best to get gauges when adding a tuner, so you might want to add that to the list. We also have programmers that are touch screen units with gauges built in. Check out all we have to offer here... Chips, Programmers and Tuning - 1994.5 - 2003 Powerstroke 7.3L Truck - Ford Powerstroke

If you opt to go with a chip and set of analog gauges instead of an all-in-one touch screen programmer, I really like the Autometer Ford Factory Match gauges. I ran them on my truck before switching over to our Infinity touch screen. Link to the gauges: Autometer Ford Factory Match Triple Gauge Set # 7077 - Gauge Kits - Gauges - 1994.5 - 2003 Powerstroke 7.3L Truck - Ford Powerstroke

We also have a combo package I put together for guys who are just starting out. It includes the S&B intake, MBRP 4" turbo back exhaust, our F5 chip with a handful of tunes, and the Autometer Ford Factory Match gauges. Check that out here. 99-03 F250/350 7.3 Economy Power Combo - Combo Packages - 1994.5 - 2003 Powerstroke 7.3L Truck - Ford Powerstroke

Let me know if you have any questions. I would be happy to help you out.

I don't want to pry but what are you spending limits? Is this a progressive build? How much hp are you looking for? Also your on pmr's so that also comes into play if you want to push it.

AFE intake, NO Limit tunes, 4" turbo back exhaust, EDGE insight for gauges, 6.0 tranny cooler, ATS turbo housing, John Wood valve body on my stock tranny. This is the basic stuff i have that is working for me pulling crates of stone regularly. Probably fine for what you want before going big and spending lots of $ which is great if you have it.

High cost but my Stage 1 injectors made a HUGE difference in towing ability, along with other mods mentioned above.

#10 ·
Yes, these definitely help. They are normally the next mod done after doing all of the stuff listed by the OP. If you are not satisfied by the power from intake, exhaust, and good tunes, larger injectors are really the only option to see any substantial power gains. Throw on a turbo to match with the injector you choose, and you will be a happy camper.

FF 180/80's and T4 BASB is a match made in heaven empty or towing!

#12 ·
Or a set of 175/80's with a S64.5 sxe

#13 ·
How about 160/30 and Stock 38R?

Looking at this with my 6637/Big boost filter setup and 4" exhaust along with T500 and PHP.

#14 ·
That will work just fine. And by stock 38r you mean no billet wheel or?

#15 ·
Stock meaning as delivered with no billet wheel. After trying a billet wheel in my stock turbo I'm not convinced there's enough benefit.

#16 ·
I agree with you on that. A stock 38r with that injector would work just fine

#17 ·
Did you fix your down pipe yet.

Maybe this afternoon if I can get it.

Just to let you know. I'm over on the army also and that's where I seen the down pipe issue. I know it wasn't posted over here.

My FF 180/80's tow great and never had problems with EGT's.

#22 ·
With a 38R? Or your BASB?

#23 ·
Were great with both. EGT's could sneak up some towing up long grades on my 38r but for every day driving it was a good match. The BASB spools very fast and remains very cool towing the same grades and load. It's just a better overall turbo IMHO.

May I suggest the PHP Hydra 17 position programmer. The guy I bought mine from has them on sale right now for 325+ tax and shipping, Originally 400. Well worth the money and plenty of added hp for towing, or if you just want a little extra boost. I am currently running that tuner with a 4 inch turbo back exhaust with the cat delete and straight through muffler with 6 inch tip, and the AFE stage 2 air intake, and I get pretty decent fuel milage as long as I stay out of the throttle. Best I have had was right about 600 miles to a tank. (38 gallon tank). I have an 02 F-350 eclb btw.
