yes a 5R110

very sensitive to the proper fluid being used Mercon SP or the New LV

this trans uses electronic solenoids to shift and they don't tolerate much in the way of fluid issues

you may also want to check for trans specific codes that may be stored

 

Just to add a little humor, I did go to the dealer and find out about a trans flush and filter change. The service manager advised me that "that wouldn't be a good idea it will only speed up the faliure time" then when I asked if it was a heated flush they told me that "I have never heard of that and is not needed, just drain, change filters and refill". I didn't get the warm and fuzzy about going back there for work. And yes they did see my truck and know that it was a diesel.

 

I'm not sure if the bullydog see's trans codes and if not where I need to go or what I need to have to see trans specific codes.

 

And to muddy up the water a little more I just got called back into work and the truck reved past the shift point 3 times in a row slamming real hard everytime then the tow/haul light came on and flashed until I cycled power on the truck. Still no codes on the bullydog.

 

3rd to 5th seems to be the biggest issue right now.

 

I'm thinking I have about 30k on the last fluid flush and filter change, it was perfomed by one of those quick lube places so I really have know idea if it was done right or not.

This is how the stories get started about having a flush then transmission problems. Most likely this flush DID cause your problems.

Unless you specifically told them what fluid to use, they used some generic fluid. That will kill your solenoids. Your symptoms indicate that you have more than one stuck solenoids.

Well belive it or not this is the best news I've had today, thanks for the reply. Anybody know any tranny shops in middle GA? Would it be a better idea to just replace the whole tranny? What trannys should I look at and what are the costs?

 

those trannys are big $ like 3-4k

you may need to just do what Mark suggested and the solenoids are DIY serviceable

but finding a shop to do a proper heated flush may be a problem

 

Alright again excuse my ignorance, could somebody tell me the solenoids I would need? I'll look the prices up from there. Yeah I have a feeling the shop will be the hard part considering the ford dealer gave me the deer in the headlight look when I asked them. I have a couple other dealers in the area I'll call maybe something in Atlanta.

5R110 valve/solenoid body consists of 7 Solenoids:
1) PC-A <line pressure control> (assembly must be dropped)
2) TCC <Torque Converter Clutch>
3) SSPC-A <coast clutch>
4) SSPC-B <overdrive>
5) SSPC-C <intermediate>
6) SSPC-D <direct clutch>
7) SSPC-E <low/reverse>
Not every solenoid are different, there are 3 different types of solenoids <above>
(#1 EPC solenoid), (#2, 4, 5 & 7 are the same), (#3 & 6 are the same)

the flush set Me back $280 at the dealer and some of that high cost is due to the $7 qt oil

 

Well the tow/haul light started flashing again so I took it to autozone and advance and neither one of their scanners showed tranny codes. I'm assuming theirs don't read them either. I completely uninstalled my bullydog and the issues got 90% better, still an issue but perhaps this will buy me enough time to find a shop and the get the solenoids changed out.

You're right, they can't read transmission codes. That's been well documented.

Yes I do. There are seven solenoids, if two are bad the other five are not far behind.

 

So if I got this right I need the following parts listed on this this link.

Is there something else? I gasket or "O" ring or something. Is there a better place to buy with cheaper prices or better quality?

 

the pan gasket is reusable and the internal filter is just a screen so just clean that

The part #'s 7j136 start with 3c3z but the solenoids in the row of three end in -ba while the other three in row of four end in -aa. I was told over the phone by tousely that there was a difference. You should be able to search these part #'s on their site and find a price difference. As well on fordpartsgiant.com but their prices aren't as good.

Google tousely ford, beats sunrise's prices. I've compared. Their website is pretty easy to use and parts answers pretty quick if you need to call. They're helpful and knowledgable.

I have two brand new in the box from tousely 7j136-ba solenoids for sale. ended up replacing my transmission instead. You can find them in the classifieds. and PM sent.
