So I am looking to swap my 96 4x4 e40d to a zf5 soon as I have been having issues with my tranny and always preferred to shift anyway. I have been doing a lot of reading and from what I’ve read the S47 is the better of the two models but they are so hard to find. I do not do much towing at all, just mainly highway and city driving.... so I am wondering if there is really that much of a difference between the s42 and s47. I understand that 1st, 2nd, 3rd and R are higher in the s42. So my question is how will the earlier model s-42 to do with my 1996 powerstroke with 3.55 gears? Also was the s-47 available in 95 too??? Or just 96 and 97? Also if anyone is selling a parts truck or a s-47 trans alone i live in Florida so please let me know

The 47 started in 96, the big difference between the two is the torque numbers. The 42 is 420 lbft where the 47 is 470 lbft

So just get which ever one you can find and go for it and don't worry.

Thank you for the reply man, so if I find a idi donor with a 42 for a good price, just go for it and I should be happy with it? I just want to make sure that if I do put a big load behind it that the 42 will handle it just fine.

There isn't that much difference in the ratio's from first to fifth to matter. A lot of the 94-96's came with the 42 and 3:55 gears.

You won't be able to go like the trucks with 4:10's but then you will get better mileage.

The higher reverse gear can be a pain backing up hill with a load, just pull it into low range and you’ll be good. ZF5, 3:55 gears, single mass clutch, 1.0 exhaust housing with tunes and 150-160cc injectors along with intercooler, e fuel = great combo. Wicked highway mileage, decent power and very reliable. This combo with 315 tires I’d get 20 mpg (imperial gallons) at 70 miles per hour, and as high 24, if I drove speed limit....50 miles per.

Sweeet, and ya I’m mainly trying to get better fuel mileage, 20 mpg sounds awesome!! And if I ever start towing a lot it will probably never be over a 10,000 pound boat anyway

Also one other thing, the donor truck I’m looking to buy is a 1993 4x4, does anyone know what I will not be able to use from the 93 for the swap?

Does anyone know if an f150 will work as a donor truck for everything except for the trans and clutch? I am mainly concerned if and old f150s driveshafts are the same size as an f350?
