Just joined, first message.

I was looking for a diesel truck. In truth, I was not looking for a powerstroke 6.0, and did not want one, because I've heard all the horror stories. In fact I was looking at a 2007 6.7 RAM, but it was too expensive. Then I just happened upon this private sale by an 80-something year old dude. 2006 F-350 dually 6.0, 4WD, 85K miles, he's original owner. Got the carfax, never been wrecked. I can see nothing wrong with this thing, by all appearances it's in good shape. No dents, no rust, underside clean, interior good, basic checks like blow-by are good. He said it's never had a problem or been in the shop.

He was asking $15K which, at least in my area, there is nothing approaching that price for this kind of truck. So to add insult to injury, I asked if he would take $11K, and I tensed up, preparing to be hit in the mouth. He said sure, why not.

Again, I've always been paranoid about these 6.0s, but you tell me, I'm no expert but it seems to be a steal at this price. Would you buy for this price?

Secondary question. How good are these Ford trucks of this year and model? I don't mean the engine - from what I understand it's garbage unless you bulletproof (again, I wanted a RAM). I mean the truck itself - the body, the build quality, wiring, suspension, etc? I do hear the transmission is good (better than Dodge's). Any thoughts?

That's a hell of a price.

Simply put the 6.0 is a do it right the first time kind of engine, it can be very picky. I plan on getting more because they are non dpf/def, have great power and fuel economy, and is the best chassis available.

The two "problems" that you cant avoid is the rear lifters need a engine removal or trans removal to change, but shouldn't ever need to be unless nobody's been changing oil, and the crank has to be removed before the cam.

The 1st gen (99-07) is the one I know most about and the chassis is far ahead of the others, I believe the 08-10 chassis is slightly better. I am still undecided on the 12 up chassis, I think they are still excellent I just don't have enough info. Im not a fan of any truck 17+ at the moment, made very cheap but I'd still go Ford if I had too.

The only Chrysler product I'd consider is a 12v Cummins and the shipping crate it came in would get scrapped. In my opinion they are the worst chassis manufacturer and the worst interior build quality. Many people like them but I do not.

The small Cummins engine I really don't like and I'm a Cummins fan boy on the big engines (l10 m11 N14) but the small ones have the drawbacks of the big ones but don't have power (1000+ ft lbs). They rattle shake and are noisy, the Ford V8 and Chevy v8s both are smooth and quiet.

Only thing I would add is that overheating the oil system can also contribute to early lifter failure. Probably the worst offender is people using an OEM filter with a tall cap - that drops lube oil pressure and flow down drastically! Eventually it won't start, but many of them do start for long enough to do damage.

It does look like a good buy, but the OP would sure be wise to read and follow the advice in the linked thread. Starting out thinking that all 6.0L engines are "garbage" is almost going to be a self-fulfilling prophecy. Quite the shame actually.

That said, a good scan tool and some general knowledge can sure save a TON of money. Hope he takes the advice - even if it is a good deal, money doesn't need to be wasted.

First 6.0L specific thing to look for is the coolant and the oil cooler performance. Even a decent looking 6.0L isn't worth much if it has been run so hard that the fluids got scorching hot. Starting it cold, and then starting it hot is important also!

The 06's had the weak EGR cooler, so hopefully no white smoke in the exhaust. Coolant in the intake and in the cylinders can cause a lot of expensive problems.

Even though the high pressure oil system was prone to leaks - all that is EASILY fixable!

The turbo might be carboned up or have some rust, but that is an easy enough fix also.

Unfortunately, people see the advice and ignore it, and then I see them posting about their troubles months later. Sort of my hobby to keep track of that stuff, lol. Gotta love retirement!

Not sure if you're still pondering or not, but do take the advice you're getting from the other folks on this thread...they ALL really know what they are talking about. I was in your position 2 years ago when I bought my 2004 and it was my first foray into diesel trucks. Yes, some people have bad things to say about 6.0L and yes, they can be finicky beasts...but everything on the market regardless of MFG or year has its pros and cons. Follow the advice you get here, do the checks they recommend and if it's as good as it seems, the truck will serve you well.

I have a 2007 6.0 (F250 Superduty Supercab (4 X 4 all manual everything) and love it in spite of having had to spend some bucks on it over its history...I've probably spent about 5 or 6K on it since I bought it brand new in late 2006. In all those years it has only failed me once and that was due to an O-ring gone bad! Plus added custom built bumpers, a slightly tuned FICM, aftermarket cap, wheels, coolant filtration, a couple of gauges and etc. It does the job I need it to do and I take the best care of it that I can...runs great and looks pretty good. The way I look at it is to go ahead and buy the truck the old guy has for sale then keep it up well and spend some money on improvements as/when needed and do some updates here and there. TAKE CARE OF YOUR VEHICLE AND IT WILL TAKE CARE OF YOU, huh?
But compared to the LARGE amount I'd have (or you maybe) to spend on a 2022 or 23 truck to take its place (replace it) if you add up what I paid for it new AND the bucks I've spent on it since purchased, I only have WAAAAY less than 1/2 in it than what I'd have to spend on a new truck. If you mean to take care of it well and keep it for a while-----save yourself some bucks!
