we have a 1997 7.3L power stroke f350 with 5speed manual we want to put a 7.3L 1996 5speed out of a 3/4 ton extended cab. some have told us the only way to know if the computer and wirring harness will work is to pull the f350 block and get some hiden numbers from the back of the engine??? sounds like hokus pokus to me but i thought i would run it by some more knollegable folks. Any feedback will be gratefull thanks Don!

The 7.3 PowerStrokes will all interchange from 94-2003. There are a few things that did change, most were for the 99+ SD trucks. So long as your 97 isn't a California truck with AB code injectors then any 97 and older engine will bolt right in.

will the engine come out without removing the oil pan and or the turbo. we got it free but could not clear the cross member oil pan and the turbo hit the fire wall on top.

Gotta yank the turbo. Don't ever do anything with the oilpan on a powerstroke without having the engine out. Not to mention that if you pulled the pan you would then be slamming the pickup tube and crankshaft counterweights into the crossmember instead.

Yea that oil pan deal was my brother's idea and i told him the same thing about caps and pickup. the turbo is a bear to get to when you have the motor loose and out of mount holes. i guess we'll be beter off putting the motor back into the mount holes then unbolten the turbo

I would do it with it loose. Pick up on the tranny and tilt the engine down, should give you MUCH more room.

The bear is doing ANYTHING to the turbo with it in the truck, lol.

Good Luck, and have fun.

the motor mount studs attached to the block are about 2.5" long and are out of their holes lifting the enging up because the studs are resting on the frame perch. the oil pan is holding us back not allowing us to slide the motor foward enough so the studs clear the perch. are the studs connected to the mount and can the mount be unbolted from the block. if so this would allow enough room to drop the engine down and getting to the turbo simpler.

can the firewall be cut out where the turbo is hitting and then when we go back in with the new engine we replace it with a false pannel. are there many wires and is there enough hollow space back there between the firewall and dash, wipper washer etc.

Completely yanking a powerstroke turbo and then putting it back on takes around 4 hours avg, 2 if you're good.

There's no reason to go hacking the truck up for routine service.

Put the engine back in the hole and take the turbo off.

Good Luck.

me! never would think of haking a good truck up. this truck has to run good but all it does is toe wood clearing eqp. through pine forest and boggy bottoms, just thought adding an extra tunnel where the turbo sits would be a 4 hour time saver if we had to pull the replacment engine because of other problems. 7.4's are sooo plentifull if we have to wee'l change them like our socks. we picked up the replacment for 2500.00 with 120K it runs good but the truck was T'boned. I have a non turbo in a truck out back it mixed it up with an big rig. got it for 1200.oo 96K runs good.
