White smoke, smells like coolant

I'm posting this up before I buy this truck just to get an idea of what's wrong.

It's a 1997 f350 cclb 278k 4x4 5spd with a superduty motor in it just the basic mods intake, exhaust, ts chip with canned tunes.

What it does is lets out white smoke smells like coolant for about 45secs every 3-4 minutes when idling, can't tell if it does it going down the road. Doesn't run hot and starts up fine cold. Doesn't seem to use coolant tho., does lack power tho, Guy has tons of $$$ into it chasing this problem at numerous shops including a ford dealer. Has New injectors , cups and harnesses and a rebuilt turbo. Passed a compression test, appears there was oil in the coolant. He's selling it just to get it out of his hair.

Any clue what's possibly causing this?

Oil in the coolant maybe oil cooler seeping? Havnt really heard of any issues on these though. Maybe a head gasket just starting to seep somewhere though. Maybe a head issue? Is there coolant in the oil as well? Positive that it is coolant and not fuel?
Positive it's coolant cuz it's got that sweet smell to it. Looks like there was oil in the coolant. Someone already replaced the oil cooler. The seller literally just had the injectors and etc done a month ago. I thought head gasket but it passed a compression test. Were else could it leak into combustion chamber to burn??
Well, one way coolant can leak into the combustion chamber is cavitation. Just guessing, but the cyclicity of the coolant/exhaust thing makes me think it might be triggered by the thermostat opening/closing. Not sure what that indicates, though. But if you've got coolant in the chambers, you should test for combustion gases in the coolant as well, with a combustion leak test. You put a "sniffer" testing tool over the cap opening of the degas bottle, and it sniffs the air space above the coolant in the tank, and if it detects carbon monoxide, the test fluid changes color.
He wants 3800 for the truck . Anyone think it's worth it?

I doubt he will let me do anymore Tests on it at this point
Around here, a CLEAN (ie. rust-free) well-maintained CCLB 5-speed is a $10,000 (or a shade more) truck. Without being able to test further, you're taking a gamble. Is it worth it to _YOU_ to gamble four large, on a truck that may turn out to be worth quite a bit more (or, may turn out to COST quite a bit more)? Only you can answer that.

When they transplanted the engine, did they swap out the clutch/flywheel for a single-mass? If so, worst case, you drop a good engine in the truck. So how much would that cost _you_? And how readily can one be found, where you live? Those are the sorts of questions to start knocking around in your head.
It's not like perfect rust free, but it is really clean compared to most. I got a motor i can rebuild for it, motors around me have gone crazy on prices. They put a south bend clutch kit in it so yes. I think it it may be worth more in parts then go threw the headache of finding a superduty 7.3. I was hoping it might have been an easy fix, Thanks guys!!
So it does not use any coolant but has a sweet smell :confused::confused:

Oil in coolant....the oil pressure is greater than coolant pressure so the oil will go into the coolant. When the oil cooler was replaced, was the cooling system flushed or did they just refill it?

Might also have a cracked timing cover if the wrong oil cooler gaskets were used.

Pretty hard to blow a 7.3 H on a stock truck unless something stupid was done ie: overheat, tuning off, etc, etc

For the time I've spent looking at it, it's used maybe a 1/2 quart, it's such a small amount i can barely notice it. The shop receipts say flushed but who knows if they really did.

It's a stock truck and off all other things it's got no hitch.
