Whine at idle

Ok fellas so I don't come on here a lot bc I'm just not a big computer guy but I have been around for a while. This fall I finally let go of my long string of Heui trucks and bought myself a 6.7. It's a 2012 xl model with now 25k on it.

Anyway I have 2 questions. First is after the truck is thoroughly warmed up it makes a pretty loud pump whine at idle. Sounds to me like either high pressure fuel or water pump. Anyone else experiencing this!!? Been to 2 dealers first wouldn't send a guy out while I had it running and later couldn't get it to happen. 2nd made me wait so long with it idling that when the tech came out it had stopped. FRUSTRATED!!

Sorry I know this is long. Second ?? Is do xl trucks not alert u on the dash when they clean the exhaust? I've put 5k on the truck and never seen it but I have had to add def. driving style is country roads and heavy towing on a goose neck.

Thanks a lot guys

well....double double check it. it sounds like a fuel system whine and that happens when you are sucking air. the primary filter on the frame has a mechanical stop tab on the cap that makes contact with an identical tab on the pump. I find them one turn too loose all the time. the other thing that I see is someone overtightened it and broke the tab off of the cap causing a crack or piece missing off the tab that keeps the oring from sealing.

Thanks yeah the local dealer tech said to check that and the Oring is good and I'm up against the stopper. I've read about the issue you are saying and it seems continuous whine where mine comes and goes

No one else is having this same issue? I have run into 2 or 3 guys at the pump recently whose trucks are doing it. They have all been clueless. Going to try and get a day off in the near future to go back to the dealer. Too bad those are so few and far between!

Have you had them look at the water pump? I'd assume the hpfp would more directly affect the way the truck runs.

I've got a 2015 6.7 that does this. Changed the fuel filters 4k ago and am pretty certain it's sealed correctly. It's hard to pinpoint exactly where the noise originates from Id like to say i think it's from up high like on the drivers side. Seems to only do it when it's over 185 degrees ect. U may be wrong here but as far as I know the 15s do not have waste gates si the vacuum line fix would not apply. Any ideas here?

The water pump was replaced under warranty before I got the truck. I haven't ruled that out yet. It's just very strange that it doesn't do it until it's very warm and then if I drive the truck long enough (all day) it seems to go away. Going to try and get it to do it today and go to the dealer

When you guys changed your fuel filters did you purge the system properly? The truck will still run and make a whining noise if there is still air in the system.

Do this...turn the key to the start position but do not crank the motor and leave it in this position for 30 seconds. Turn it off. Repeat 6 times. Hopefully this will take care of your problem.

Its not from the fuel system, it would be constant if it was. I have never heard one doing this would be curious to know what it is.

OK so in the process of changing tuners put the truck completely back to stock. Figured while that way I'd run it for a bit and then take it to the dealer and have them check this whining noise out as it does it every time when it gets to about 188 degrees ect. So I go and do an oil change and it goes away for awhile, and then after a couple hundred miles it is intermittent and not nearly as loud. I change my oil every 5000 miles and after 20k I started using mobile one 5w40 full synthetic. Now I did use a Napa gold filter. Is it possible an aftermarket filter could be causing any of this. Anyone experienced anything like this?

I have a 2011 and I switched to rotella t5 synthetic and had ran it for two oil changes and my turbo bearing fell apart on me without any whining or any indication that it was going bad with 102xxx miles... so I put a 15 turbo in it so I don't have to do this again at 200,000.... and I switched back to motocraft 10w 40...

I've got a 2015 with right at 20k miles. I had a whine that was worrying me also. Took it to several shops and have been told that it is some kind of return off the high pressure side of the fuel system and is normal for the gen. 2 motors. Idk if this is true or just a tech blowing smoke up my ass

Justgot mine back with a new turbo, somethings updated about it but not sure what. Runs good with no noise so far, butthey changed the oil. Before my last oil change it would make that noise consistently at idle once it got to about 190+ eot. When i changed the oil and filter it quit and didnt hear it for a few hundred miles and then would start hearing it but not as loud. Not convinced it was the turbo but i crawled all iver that thing tryung to pinpoint source and couldnt nail it. Hopefully they were right

I have a 2013 and we may have the same thing going on. Could you post a video on this? My truck will not make the noise if it is has not warmed up passed 170 degrees on the oil temp. I spoke with the dealers diesel mechanic and he has started speaking with Ford on the tech hotline.

Next time you hear the noise, craw under the truck, bring a long screw driver and place it on the lower bolt of the transmission bell do you hear the whine even worse? if you do we have the same issue. I'll keep you posted on what the dealer says.
