What makes those motors so special? I see the BMW's are common rails along with the VW TDI's. My aunt married a guy from Scotland and he swears common rails are God's gift to the diesel community. Any and all help is appreciated

Increased injection pressure, extremely precise control over the injection event(timing, PW, IP), multiple injection events, etc... Basically complete control over the injection system increasing efficiency, reducing noise and emissions, and the ability to make big power very clean. For all out performance you just can't outfuel a mechanical pump, but for clean and controlled power its hard to beat a CR. Only real downsides are they aren't cheap to fix/maintin, and they are sensitive to bad fuel.

I don't know if they are gods gift to diesels but they have helped us out a bunch in the performance and emissions war. There is a reason why all new diesels on the road(at least in pick-ups/cars) have been CR's for years.
