i some times smell coolant when towing 5-6 ton up hills. what should i look for that would make me smell this? I can not see it any where and never have a puddle under the truck but it must be some thing.
Degas bottle will have white residue from the coolant "puking" out. I have had some of the same experiences...usually it's some other vehicle and not mine.
sounds like you are puking pressure out the
degas bottle. that pressure comes from a
couple places... the egr cooler, and the head
gaskets.
most likely one of them is leaking. there are
tests to see which is which, but it usually goes
like this:
oil cooler clogs up on coolant side.
reduced coolant flow takes out egr cooler.
egr cooler lets coolant into intake, getting
into cylinders, and blowing head gaskets.
if you get a teakettle sort of whistle when
you are hard on the throttle, it's most
likely head gaskets leaking combustion
gas into the cooling system, pushing out
thru the cap on the system.
+1 on the cap. The TSB also states to look for nicks on the surface that seals the cap. Sand it down if it is rough or nicked.
That being said, a pressure gauge on a hose to the degas bottle is the best troubleshooting tool IMO. If it is overpressuring, then you need to decide if it is head gaskets or EGR cooler. The only real way to know that for sure is a tear down and EGR cooler pressure test (again IMO).
