I have an 05 f250, been thinking of trading it in for a 6.4. I'm wondering if it's worth trading it in.. My 6.0 hasn't gave me any problems since the head studs and egr block was put it.. Well thanks for the help..

If all your want is more power then go for a 6.4. You can get more power with alot fewer mods, but with less fuel milage and I still think the 6.4 shortblock is not as strong as the 6.0. Just my opinion based on the type of failure I have seen.
if you plan on keeping the 6.4 forever, keep the 6.0.i love the power the 6.4's put down but when they break its bad.i wouldnt own one that was out of warranty, the 6.0's are a strong reliable truck once the bs is gone and easy to work on compared to a 6.4 just my.02 though
:whs:
The type of shortblock failure I see are bent rods when a EGR cooler leaks and hydro-locks the engine, cracked and melted pistons from overfueling and more lately I have see some cam failure were lobes are worn flat and the pushrod gets tossed out of the lifter. I also just had a high pressure fuel pump that locked up from water in the fuel that stripped the pump and cam gears and bent every valve and dented every piston. Like stated above If your have a 6.4 out of warranty you need about $15,000 in saving incase of a engine failure
wow!!! like you havent seen that kind of failure on a 6.0!
but like said above, if the failure they have seen on 6.4 has superseeded the 6.0 failure, then stick with what you got.
id hate to see you go from a good running truck to a truck that someone told you is a turd.
as much as i like my truck and would say to go for it, i would think that you probably paid off the 6.0?
if so then i would stay with a good reliable truck and not add another payment.
my truck has been good to me and have only had a bad EBP sensor (which i changed), EGR valve got stuck when stock and a bent drag link bar, bent by yours trulyLOL
I havent had any issues with my 6.4l.It was a good truck just the fuel economy sucked. The best I could get was 15 on the highway. I would average 10-12 intown. I would average 220-230 miles pertank. I put 73100 miles on it. I only had a few recalls and they installed a new charge air cooler. I traded it in for a 2011 6.7l.
imo the 6.4 is a great motor. if you have a good running 6.0 then it is a hard choice because there is a chance of getting a 6.4 thats a lemon. one thing for sure they are very very sensitive to there fuel any water/gas or other chemicals/additves are almost guaranteed to grenade the hpfp. i have seen problems of internal fuel leaks or over fuel from regen overfilling the crankase pushing oil/fuel out the ccv into the turbo burning it up luckilly i havent seen one run away because of it though. also if something like that does happen i believe you have to change both turbos as a pair. aside from that there has been turbo issues common and i have seen a couple with the up pipes crack which even though sounds and seems simple its a real pita to fix. so honestly i think the 6.4 is alot better motor than the 6.0 even though the architectural similarities. the only real draw back is the fact thats if you dont have a shop available with a lift its very hard to work on the 6.4. but they do create awesome power very easy and with a dpf and egr delete they are very reliable. the 6.0 is a very good motor alot better than its reputation its just that there are quite a few weak links and when there is a failed part internally for example a cam or lifter requires complete dissasembally of the motor to fix. (of course same for the 6.4) from what ive seen as a diesel mechanic although i mostly am around big trucks the 6.4 does seem to be more reliable. my 6.4 in 40000 miles mostly tuned has been pretty much problem free.
sorry about the novel i hope there is some valuable info in their tho.
