I have been helping my brother with his hard start issue. First we know one cylinder is low on compression but the truck has 300k on it. Today I was scanning with AE and when doing a CCT get a fault for #8 which could be the CPS and that is also the cylinder with lower compression.

I was checking his glow plugs because when he replaced them and the GPR about 6 months ago the solenoid they ended up giving him stayed on all the time so needless to say only one glow plug didn't read open when testing ohms. I had my old set of glow plugs that I new were still good and I replaced all them for him and in this process I noticed that the nut for the IPR was laying in the valley. So after we got done with all the glow plugs and tightened the nut up on the IPR we tried to start and got a no start. I hooked up AE and noticed that IPR% was at 60 and ICP was only at 250psi so I went an loosened up the nut till it was barely on and the truck fired right up. usually I read about being lose causing problems so now im lost.

The ICP sensor is oily and I can replace that with my used one (it was oily as well but truck ran same after replacement). I don't have my laptop right now but when driving the ICP seemed great even with spikes above 3k but the truck seemed to fall on its face about 60-70. At 65 you can put it to the floor and it says it has 2800k ICP and IPR % was only 40.

What's everyone's thoughts the IPR is only a few months old (not sure what brand he bought though). We do have a parts truck and I think the IPR on it is original should we try swapping that one out or could this be an HPOP issue?

Also not sure if it has any relation but when AE was hooked up it was trying to tell me the water temp was over 300 but the gauge was right at normal and truck had only been running about 15 minutes, the oil temp also said it got up to 190. Even after it sit a few hours while we did glow plugs the water temp was still trying to say it was over 200. When trying to data log I could not get the vehicle speed to register it all it would say we were traveling .2 or .4. I am a bit under the weather so maybe my sinuses were playing games on my hearing but when I tried to do a buzz test the first time before starting the truck (has sit a few days) I never heard a single one buzz but the tach moved and it said passed. Did it two more times and heard all 8 fine then, injectors only have about 1k on them they and they were stock Alliants.

water temp wont be correct as the water temp goes straight to the cluster and not through the pcm. and that does sound like an hpop issue

Thanks, I am leaning towards HPOP since the new injectors really didn't help with starting issues. I was planning on upgrading my HPOP anyways for my injectors on my E99 so I will probably just take the one of the parts truck for my core and then he can always run my 15 degree pump on his so he isn't throwing expensive parts at it till we figure it out.

I also did the rotational velocity test and it all showed 0s so not sure if it wasn't reading right or what is going on since I would assume the one with lower compression would be off.

I was also thinking of swapping the PCM from the parts truck E99 and his truck is a 2000.

Update after new starter

Truck was low on oil so we topped it off and tried starting, unfortunately I forgot to record with AE and monitor IPR duty cycle. It took about a minute of cranking all together to start and this was after sitting in a 60 degree shop all night. While cranking the icp built to 2k and stayed till it started.

At idle the truck had 800 psi at 20% so I tightened the IPR nut back up and it didnt kill it today it actually seemed to smooth out idle and dropped to 650 psi at 12%. These numbers still seem high compared to mine so not sure what is causing that. The truck is blowing some blue and white smoke until it warms up.

In neutral when you put it to the floor it seems to fall on its face till 2k rpms and when doing this the pressures were about 1800 at 35%. The truck will restart immediately like nothing is wrong after the first time it starts, and you have to let it sit a few hours an cool off before issues start again. He is going to put it outside tonight and see if it will start in the morning should be in the 20s.

The only other things I could think might be causing problems is before injectors were put in they replaced a uvch pigtail and maybe they mixed up a couple of the injector wires, unfortunately I didn't think about this till home and truck is a couple hours away. I checked and the ebpv moved freely with truck off, but didnt verify if maybe it was stuck on when running causing the low power.

Anyone have anything else they think I should try when I get back up there in a couple weeks?

When I go back I will be sure to record the results with AE

Here is one of the recordings while driving yesterday after motor was fully warm and the ICP readings seem all over the place at times but makes me wonder if there isnt some sort of electrical issues with the results of buzz test and that Rotational Velocity was all zero, wont read vehicle speed and coolant/oil temps were way off when using AE.
