Nothing more, nothing less

What is the warranty of the Garrett "PowerMax" GTP-38r?

What is the cost to rebuild a Garrett "PowerMax" GTP-38r?

Really, that is all I am asking.

I don't know what the warrenty is. Rebuild cost is high. If you don't need wheels, the only way to "rebuild" it is to replace the cartridge. IIRC you can get the cartridges for around 675-875 depending on the vendor. Those are old prices, they may be less now you'd have to check with a Garrett dealer to be sure.

That is a fairly standard warranty by OEM turbo mfg's. High performance places such as TN generally have a better warranty. Even Ford was required to send warranty turbos in to Garrett for evaluation. I've had to do the same with CAT, Holset, BW, KKK, Switzcher and Rotomaster. Garrett has had pretty much the same warranty since they were Airesearch.

FWIW, when you swap out the CHRA in a ball bearing turbo (or any turbo for that matter) you have a NEW unit. Housings do not wear out. That is not a rebuild, it's new. You cannot sell a balanced, NEW CHRA without it including the compressor wheel. All you do is bolt your housings back on it and enjoy.

You can have a NEW CHRA for 1000 or less. It's really not cost prohibitive. Especially considering that you just don't actually ever need it anyway. I doing mine in the near future because it's got a bent turbine blade, and I ran it at over 50psi for about 3 months. Now with the GT47 right around the corner awaiting any possible debris, it's just not worth it to chance with the bent blade and all.

Pius is a great guy. Whenever I'm in the area now I stop by and he takes a break and has me sit down with his wife, son, and dog for a cup of coffee. Even gave me a Bell Turbo hat that he forgot to give me when he rebuilt my turbo.

MY suggestion is to buy a TN turbo as that is the best turbo in the whole wide world with the best warranty to boot.
ITP is also the best place to buy a TN turbo, Great dealer with the best reputable service.

See, this is what David does... He cant provide a cost to rebuild it... He cant provide a warranty link...

So insted of just letting go its another pot shot about TN...:lame:

Theres a link to a "new" center section... $1250 plus shipping... Now you might be able to find one a little cheaper but...

At that price, why rebuild? Buy a new one and sell the old one as parts on eBay. My stocker got 220K, I assume the BB cartridge will last at least as long. Anyone got any real data that shows MTBF, service life, or suggested rebuild interval on these? Serious question!!!! I got a co-worker who might want one, if I can convince him that spending $1000 to have his "buddy" rebuild his stocker is a rip off.

1000 to rebuild a stock turbo? WTF

It's 100 for a sack of bushings off ebay and less than 30 minutes to do it.
Maybe 100 more to have someone balance it
This guys "buddy" is supposedly a top diesel mechanic. I gave up convincing him that the Banks package his buddy wants him to put on his 99 will NOT give him 450hp. He gave me #### for months after I barely beat him with my truck. All I had was a straight pipe and Jody's 80hp tune in my ECU. I raced him light to light, about 1/4 mile, and I got about 1/2 a truck length on him. Of course the fact that mine is a 4x4 CC, LB, 6-speed, with a heavy shell and over 200K at the time didn't matter against his 2wd, SB, ExCab with the rebuilt auto. Hes one of those guys that has a buddy who claims to know everything so he knows everything and everyone else is wrong. I don't know why I talk to these people. Just like my ex-friend with the 500hp Banks powered Duramax.

I think I got him convinced that a 38R would be a good upgrade, and his buddy I guess finally agreed that the 38R MIGHT be better than his stocker. He said something about the stocker still being a better option since the $1000 to rebuild it was cheaper than a new 38R. No way in hell am I going to bring up the rebuild cost of a 38R, thats a bag of worms I wanna stay away from. Good to know tho.

Anyway, what were we talking about again? :D

I'm going to throw this out there one more time......just because it's pissing me off that people can't understand this.

If you buy a new CHRA (Center Housing Roating Assembly) for the Garrett GTP38R there is N O T H I N G rebuilt about it. It will BE a new turbo. Housings dont' freakin wear out.

Now when you rebuild a thrust bearing turbo, it IS rebuilt. Someone physically takes the old unit apart and replaces and then rebalances the assembly as a reman would be done. NOT NEW.

If you want to compare apples to apples compare the CHRA option for the GTP38R to a NEW thrust bearing turbo cost. And they are less than $1000 brand new, not 1200. That is for a N E W CHRA......

NEW, NEW, NEW, NEW.......

Maybe that will sink it in there.... One more time, it's not rebuilt....but N E W !!!

Maybe I missed something here. Has anyone worn a GT38R out to where it would need to be rebuilt?

That is the other point.....they just don't give up.

I am going to swap out my CHRA at some point now because I have a bent turbine blade and with the GT47-88 sitting just downstream it's just not worth the risk.

It honestly should have grenaded on about the 5th WOT run after bending the blade. I fully expected it too, and it didn't......still didn't......and now 6 or so months later, and I've got a second turbo behind it that's just not worth the risk of loosing it now.

That's why I'm swapping it out. After 5 or so years it's probably not a bad idea to freshen it up being that it has run upward of 50psi as a single in the past.
