I noticed oil on the back of the driver side head, running down the transmission, and dripping onto the floor. I also noticed that the number 8 cylinder exhaust manifold flange looked very greasy, with a lot of grime around it. I saw one video where loose exhaust manifold bolts caused just that. And sure enough, the two manifold bolts on the number 8 cylinder were loose... very loose. Probably because of all the heat and pressure those bolts go through. But I re-tightened them, and I'll be checking it for future leaks. If it keeps leaking, I'll be turning my attention to the valve cover gasket. Can anyone else think of a cause? I really doubt it's a head gasket, because that would cause a lot of other problems.

I think it’s coming from the very back of the valve cover. It’s just super hard to see on camera.

My block has seen salt at least once when I went to OKC in January. But I washed my truck first thing when I got back home to Alabam

Curious as well, I have an oil leak very similar. I don't think mine spots the ground as the exhaust burns it off.

I cleaned the back of the engine, and re-tightened the exhaust manifold bolts. The ones at the back were very loose. So far, I don’t see any returning leaks. But I’ll keep everyone posted.

I would replace those bolts to be honest. I made that mistake once of just tightening them and ended up snapping them off. Just my .02

Luckily I was able to torque them to spec without breaking them. I do have it on my to-do list to replace those bolts with nicer ones when I do my non-vgt swap.

I have a 97 F350 that leaks from the drivers side head. Their is a plug with a o-ring in the back of the head. Very hard to remove. I had a Ford dealer mechanic try for 2 hours to replace the plug. He gave up trying to remove the plug. Still leaks.

I’ve cleaned the back of the engine with degreaser and a hose after re-tightening the manifold bolts. So far, no leaks have returned.

I think the better question is why is there so much oil coming out of the manifold port.
I’m not entirely sure. My truck doesn’t burn any oil, no blown gaskets, no bad injectors. It was an extremely slow leak, and wouldn’t even spot the ground most of the time. My truck does have the stock crank case vent system, so maybe the oil is coming from there, I don’t really know. It’s definitely something to look into.

While changing the glow plug o-ring, I quickly turned attention to the breather box. It looks like that’s where oil is spewing out from. And it’d make sense why it’s such a slow leak.

And yes, I know the outlet is upside down. I have it like that cause it’s going to a “catch can”

EDIT - disregard
Yeah I saw your earlier post about a check valve. There’s actually a Rice Krispy treat looking thing inside there made of stainless, and two plates. All of which were removed in favor of a catch cab system.

That will do it. Oil is going to pool there and leak out unless you have a perfect seal around where that tube goes into the CCV box.
The breather box actually had to be split open to be flipped around. But I took it back apart, and ran a bead of RTV around it, and around the o-ring surfaces, and reinstalled. Hopefully that seals it.
