PORT HURON, Mich. — A U.S. Coast Guard rescue helicopter conducting a nighttime training exercise crashed into southern Lake Huron and the three-member crew safely escaped before the helicopter sank.

The Coast Guard says the crash happened around 9:45 p.m. Tuesday about nine miles north of Port Huron while the Coast Guardsmen were conducting hoist training. They were picked up by the crew of a Coast Guard boat.

No injuries were reported. The cause was under investigation and salvage operations were expected Wednesday.

The HH-65C's pilot was identified as 39-year-old Lt. Vincent Bukowski of Chicago. Twenty-seven-year-old Lt. Tasha Hood of Bell County, Texas was co-pilot and 24-year-old Aviation Electronics Technician 3rd Class Samuel Downie of Tyler, Texas was flight mechanic
