Tweeter mounting questions.

I bought 2 pairs of Infinity 693.9s for my '99 CC Superduty. I'll be putting one pair in the front doors and another pair in the back, probably also in the doors.

Amazon.com: INFINITY 693.9i330W (Peak) 3-Way 6 x9 Inch Speakers (Pair): Electronics

They are 3 way 6x9s with an external crossover. I bought them over other models because of their efficiency (96 dB) and their lower resonant frequency. I am trying to run without an amp or a sub woofer.

Lets start with the fronts.

I removed the tweeter and mid driver from the speaker assembly. Its glued in place and is easily removed from behind with a hammer and punch.

Here are some pictures of it. The tube served as a mount back to the woofer magnet and is no longer needed. I can cut it off flush with the back of the tweeter.

I am going to mount the 6x9 woofers in the front doors as the stock speakers are.

I want to mount the tweeter/mid assemblies separately in the cab ala component systems.

I have the following options:

Far back on the upper surface of the door panel, facing up. Its down in this picture so you can see the footprint on the panel.

On the lower part of the sail panel, facing back:

On the A pillar cover, facing in:

Which of these would be best ?

Would you try painting the plastic on the tweeter assembly ? I'm worried about the paint clogging the mesh holes. Would you cover it with cloth ? What about the switch ?

Thanks !

The problem you are faced with is that those tweeters have no directional adjustment. Having said that, you want them to directed to a point that approximately intersects the center of the truck (from what I've read...I could be way off there). None of those positions offers this placement. You will need to experiment. Wire it all up and temporary affix the tweeters in the options you present and decide what sounds best. That would be my game plan.

my plan would be the a pillar because it has the best direction out of your choices. only problem is the "tail" on that tweeter is large to be fitting anywhere besides the doorpanels...

also the choices on the tops of the panes would be ruled out immediately for me as if it rains or anything and the window is down they will get drenched with water.

It will face totally inward if I mount it on the pillar. Directly to the other side of the truck.

I can easily cut the tube off. The rest of the assembly sticks out about 3/8".

Yeah, probably.

What about in the sail panels, facing back ? I thought that was going to be the favorite. It angles in slightly. If I mount the tweeter assembly via the "post", it angles in about 30 degrees... but then I need to make a skirt to fill in underneath the assembly.... hmmm.... I'm trying to avoid any fabrication.

I could actually leave the post intact and use it to stand them off from the sail panels. That would move them toward the driver, clear of the side of the dash as well as point them inward about 30 degrees... making them nearly point to the center of the truck.

All this effort is much better than mounting them with the speakers in the door panels, right ?

kinda depends, by seperating the tweeter from the mid you will be gaining much better imaging and stage height however without properly tuning the speakers either through time alignment or some phase adjustments the highs and lows will have a seperation that you will be able to pick up upon.

If you can do it the best way to test things out is get it all wired up with some extra runs of wire and either use some velco or 2 sided tape or hot glue and temporarily mount the tweeters where you like and then sit back and listen for a little while.

It also depends on the tweeter if they will respond well off axis (pillar mounts and top of door mounts) or if they will respond better on axis (aimed at you)

On of the places that seems to work great for people is in the pillars aimed directly accross at each other. This will give a great stage and imagine, but works best with good off axis tweeters. I loved mine in that spot however I was missing out on a bit of the upper register, so thats why mine are mounted in the sail panels just above the dash level.

Its hard for me to tell with the grill on but the tweeter on the right side appears to be a Ring Radiator style. These are known for being very smooth and crisp and have great flat response, However they don't have the greatest response off axis response.

good deal on the Kenwood :D

Yea Infinity seems to know what they are doing and between the two tweeters I bet they have it all covered for best of both worlds if that is indeed a ring radiator tweeter.

I plan to redo this sometime soon to suck them back some more (like unbroken's new panels) but this is how they sit now in the truck

And it was "only" $300 with shipping delivered to my door. Seems if a deck isn't double DIN with video and nav, people don't want it. I'm going to use an iPad type device for my video and nav.

The 693.9s are Kappas, so I think its fair to expect some goodness.

Looks nice, but the side of the dash sits closer to the door on a pre 05 and I don't want to do any fiberglassing. I could put them right at the top of the sail panel, facing mostly back.

Windshields are pretty sound reflective, right ? What if I mounted them flat on the dash and pointed them straight up and let the windshield reflect the sound back to the listeners ?

Something we haven't talked about yet is that I am going to mount another pair of speakers in the back. Probably put the woofers in the kick panels of the rear doors and the tweeters... not sure where to put those... but with proper placement, they could fill the sound stage for the front people too.

Another option might be to put one pair of tweeters in the B pillars and another in the C pillars ? Or is that too close to the ears ?

Lots going on here...

Are you running speakers in the front and the back or just one or the other ? Did you mount 2 sets of tweets in the C pillars or just one ?

my staging is way off, im going to have to overhaul the interior when i get it running again.

as it sits ive got a set of components in the front and 2 sets in the rear with tweeters both in the door panels and the c pillar.. the speakers are int he door panels front and back and than in the factory rear location.

wow... lots of drivers in your truck.

Do you have a head unit that does time delay ?

I appreciate everyone taking the time to share what they've done and comment about what I am about to do.

So top of the sail panel, facing in about 20 degrees if possible is the best place for mine ?
