That's what my local Les Schwab tire store just told me.

I have stock 16x7 wheels, have always run 285/75's on them but decided to try 255/85's this last time to have the slightly taller and skinnier tire that was actually recommended for a 7" wide wheel. In the 255 size I came up with Toyo M/T, Toyo M-55, and BFG KM2 as options - these are all E rated tires. There are more options in this size but they are all D rated. I went with the Toyo M/T's because people had raved about how well they work and how long they last. I just went down to the store and had them measure the depth and they came up with 9/32 left. They have 19/32 when new. These tires have 10,336 miles on them. The guy then told me that they were half worn down and I then asked him if he wore his own personal tires to 0/32? Of course he said no and he would change them out at 2 or 3/32 left. That means I have 6/32 left which puts me on a schedule to have to change them out at 16,000 miles.

W-T-F?

On edit: For background the same store replaced all four ball joints and aligned the front end at the same time the tires got put on. The alignment seems good and the tires are wearing evenly.

Weird. Wonder if they've changed something. I used to abuse the crap outta mine and they still lasted at least 30,000.

I would definatly fight for part of my money back once they are worn out. You have documentation of when they were put on from your tire shop. That sucks non the less.

I've gotten more miles than that out of a set of TSL Super Swampers I once had.

Hope I don't get in the same boat. Just put on a set of 35x12.50 toyo m/t's only got about 200 miles on them so far.

Are you always running heavily loaded or something? What's the tire pressure your running?

I thought it was bad to only get 41k out of my nitto terra grapplers. I coulda got at least another 5k out of them if they wore evenly though, but the passenger side chewed them up.

Not at all! I have towed with these tires but only ~2,000 miles out of the 10,000 that are on them and most of that was only pulling ~6K. 500 miles of that was pulling 11K. They have been on pavement for 70% of the time and the rest is driving on forest roads, muddy lake beds, and 2-12" snow. The tires were put on exactly one year ago.

I run 50psi in the fronts, 36psi in the rears (empty), and anywhere from 50-70 in the rears when loaded or towing. The tires are wearing evenly and the same store has rotated and balanced them twice.

Too damn expensive to keep this up!

I agree totally, I thought it was bad enough getting 40k out of a $240(ea) tire, from what I have read here, and what the shop owner who sold them to me (who has run them a few times on his own truck) said I would get more than 40k out of the Toyo's (at $325ea) I hope to get at least 50-60k out of these once I get the front end aligned nicely so it doesn't chew up the passenger side tire again.

I would say it has to do with the tire's width. Most of the longer lasting sizes are wide and distribute the load over a greater surface area.

Might be, mine were 37x13.5x17.

Mine have 40000 and still have a good amount left. I think people dont realize that the toyo mts dont have tall tread new.

The tire shop blamed it on the tire width as well. These are 255 wide and stock is 265...are you telling me that 10mm of width has that much affect?

The truck has 164K miles on it and has had 285's on it ever since new until this set. I guess I am going to have to go back...I have had...

Stock tires removed at 18K miles...
BFG A/T's last 45K but ended with catastrophic blow-out that took out a brake line (on the rear)
Wild Country M/T's last 33K miles (too soft)
Toyo A/T's last 20K and sold them used with 50% tread left (siped and were chunking badly)
Goodyear Wrangler Pro-Grade last 38K miles (50K mile warranty even on HD trucks)

In retrospect I guess I should have gone back to Goodyear and had them warranty (pro-rated) their tires and gone with DuraTrac's in 285. One of the down sides of rural living is tire shops are few and far between and the next set might have to be mail order. :(

Ditto... Have not had a set go less then 55k...
Yah Joe, you are the main reason I decided to try the M/T's with your super-human tire wear. They work! The traction is perfect but this is an expensive lesson.
