This past weekend i did 400+ miles towing with my OBS CCSB 7.3 5speed 4:10 truck . Loaded I figured i was grossing 17-18k. Empty w/trailer I figure 10,500.

I got 13.5mpg w just trailer and 10 with the trailer loaded. All the while @70mph

All depends on what you are towing, and the terrain.

I get about 11-12 towing a 6000 lb Nash 25' long RV trailer or a 7000 lb tractor/car trailer load. It does not matter what terrain. Towing is always under 65 mph, usually 60 using OD whenever possible.

Really a fuel pig when towing but all honest drivers will report very similar numbers nomatter which brand.

2008 F-250 CCSB 3.73 Automatic.

First load grossed a little over 21k, second over 23k and 13k for both unloaded. Got 12.2mpg for the tank hauling them to the scrap yard in Stoystown, its a pretty easy pull except for one part that's probably 2-3 miles up a mountain and running 50-55mph.

Hauled 6 loads like this on hilly backroads to coat my driveway, they each grossed between 20k-21k and 11k unloaded. Got 12.4mpg for the tank on them. All pulled in the Spartan 210 Tow Performance.

What percentage of your pickup driving is towing?

Driveaway guys tow 50% of their miles.

I would say 90% of my driving my CCSB has the trailer hooked to the back of it. I have a Ranger to do the daily driving stuff

Just out of curiosity, if you tow a big honkin’ trailer all the time, why do you use a pickup and not a real two-axle tractor? Something kinda like this:

Hauling Trucks - Freightliner Trucks

You know, tractors are optimized for towing in ways that pickups never can be.

Most people dont want to spend 75-100k on a medium duty truck, just to get 4-7 MPG, have a 10k a year insurance bill, 1000k a year registration bill and have a pickup loaded with just as much pass then on every hill:pointlaugh:

Think the pickup will last as long as a purpose-built tractor?

:whs: Thats exactly what I was thinking LOL, though they are NICE. I personally saw an International MXT this weekend and that thing was sweet! Ill see if i can get those pictures of it up.

I tow a track skid steer in town so i clock in at around 12k and get at best 13mpg, but i like to take my time. But as for highway towing i pull a 25' enclosed trailer CRAMMED full of funiture cruising between 70-75mph, so i get around 14, 15 at best. I have 3.55 gears which is nice for hauling on I-40.

A decent diesel dually will set you back more than 50 large these days.
