Has anyone dedicated the time to figuring out is it better to give it a little extra push to shift into OD for a mile or two before you have to slow WAY down/stop or just let your motor hum at 45-55 mph @ 2400-2600rpm for that little stretch?

Humming at that higher RPM is going to have more friction going on that will result in more fuel consumption. If you've got a taller gear to use, why not use it?

I should have mentioned it's an automatic, so getting it to shift into its highest gear requires me goosing it before I run out of road and have to slow/stop. Is burning the fuel to accelerate with what I would save compared to letting it hum over a short distance?

Do you have a tuner? I can let off the throttle on my automatics to get the trans to shift into a taller gear.
