if your rim is 8.5, tire shops i have spoke w/ say don't go more than 2-4 wide. So 8.5 rim, 10-12 wide tire. 10 wide rim, 12-14ish wide.
Too narrow of a rim, you pull the cap into a round shape and you'll really have to watch your air pressure and rotations to keep them wearing properly.
I've seen a bunch of chevy guys put 315's "without a lift" and factory rims. The center always wears fast and the handling goes to $hit pretty fast at highway speeds.
