I'm thinking of cutting some holes in the bottom section (away from latch hardware) of my tailgate for additional storage, similar to the picture below. I realize the ribs are structural, and expect to have to reinforce the sheet metal after cutting holes.

Has anyone done this? Do you know where any cross members might exist under the ribbed section? I'd like to have an idea of where to cut to provide the best access to the hollow section, without interfering with existing structural pieces.

There is no structure below the middle - it's hollow. You can tell where any structure is by the spot welds dimpled into the steel surface.
