yes - there are a couple people who have done this that i've read about. the 03 has less vanes i believe, which makes it louder. if i recall correctly, the 03 turbos have 10 or 11 vanes, 04s have 13, 05s have 15. i would imagine it may flow just a tad more assuming the vanes are the same size and that there are just less of them. also i think they may have different compressor wheels.
honestly, i can't see the advantage unless you can get one very cheap. then again, i am no 6.0 turbo expert.

yeah, i have a ford racing intake, with a 4in turbo back mbrp exhaust w/ 6 in tip......

my whistle is freaking awesome.....i'm always getting asked what kind of aftermarket turbo i have.

i thought the 03s had more vanes, which would mean bigger and better boost right?

I get the same questions. The 03 has less vanes. You running a muff. on it or straight. I have mine on and wonder if its loader off.

We put an 03 turbo on the Race Truck, which is an 05. And yes, you need the 03 pedistal.

Seemed like a little more power, and definately more whistle.

My little bro's 03, with a 5" straight pipe whistles insane..... makes dogs bark miles away.:D

I still have that 03 turbo and pedistal, and might be selling it, as I have no need for it anymore....... what is it worth??

The 03 turbo has 10 vanes on the turbine wheel as well as different vgt vanes. The 04-07 turbos have 13 vanes as well as a smaller turbine wheel.

A direct swap on an 04 would deliver less backpressure.

A swap on the 05-07's would give more airflow (larger compressor wheel) and less backpressure (larger turbine wheel).

I have an 04 and I'm about to put the 03 turbo in and I was wondering if anybody has actually heard them side by side and could really tell a difference? My buddy that works at a ford dealership found me an 03 and is gonna hook me up for 250! Just wanted to see how much of a difference it would be I have a 5 inch straight pipe on mine right now as well

Fast 6.0 is right. But to take the confusion out of it, the 03 turbine wheel has ten BLADES not veins, and the newer turbo's have 13 BLADES. They all have 9 VEINS that are actuated by the VGT Solenoid. And yes the 03 turbo is roughly a 58mm on the compressor side, and the newer ones are roughly 56mm. I have also put several 03 turbo's on 05 to 07 trucks without changing the pedestals. The two front bolts on the pedestal will be enough to hold it in place. I have seen very few turbo's with all three bolts in place. Just be sure to tighten very well and you should have no problems.

I can tell the 03 will whistle mine does so loud after i run a 4 inch turbo back my wife made me put the cat back on to make it tolerable for her when she uses it also had a 04 turbo in it for a while barley heard it then. I like the whistle so I suck it back in and yes you need to swap the pedistals.
