brain fart of the day....

why can't you use a stock turbo in a compound setup, say with a garret 42 or 45? could it be made to use the stock for low end boost and spool up the big guy up. Sure would make a nifty diy kit.

aside from having to figure out new piping and flanges or
would the boost just blow the stocker apart?

No reason why you cant. No reason at all. In my setup now until I get the gate on the second turbo my GTP38R is running a whopping 8psi at 55lbs manifold pressure at 544rwhp.

If a TP38 can't take that I'll kiss your ass, lol. You obviously have to gate the little charger with something more than the integral gate if you plan to throw that much fuel at it. But for say a towing setup, I don't see any reason why the Stock turbo couldn't be made tame even with the integral gate.

Go for it.

Thats what I plan on doing with mine to start with... I have already started on the fabrication, I'm going to do it much like what charles has done... should make for a quick spool up and a ton of power up top...

i was thinking on my setup....

Van turbo with wicked wheel.... 1.15 housing... adjustable wastegate... then you can crack the gate open if need be... then run my GT-42 with an extrernal gate....

with the lower drive pressures of the 1.15 housing and having pressure on the compressor side i think that the turbo should be fine in regards to bearing wear because all things should be equal or close to it...

It would defanatly be a budget kit. That may also leave you the option to upgrade to a TN or other Dropin replacement later on. I personally would start there as they have lower drive pressures than the stocker does. LOL

i was thinking about doing this same thing, only problem id have keeping the stocker is that my van turbo spools up to slow, it doesnt start making good boost till 2000rpms and doesnt hit full boost till 2300, could just be the 1.15 housing, i think the .84 would be a lot better choice

hm, never tried the 1.0 personally, think it will make much difference? it would be nice to see full boost at 2000rpms hehe.

Mine spools pretty good, I have a little more fuel though.

It's wierd because it spools ok on the street, just from a stop light etc. But if I do a boosted launch it takes FOR EVER. Like 5 secs to even start moving the needle LOL

You guys just flat out refuse to use the correct terminology of First and Second stage don't you.

I guess it's worth your time to keep having to clarify what you mean when you say uno and dos, then top, then bottom, then watermellon, then cantelope and so on....

The first charger is the ahhh, First stage, and the second charger is the ahhh Second stage. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

The atmospheric turbo is the first stage, so that'd be the 47 in Charles' truck and the 38R is the second stage.
