Does the steering column need to be removed or loosened in order to replace the steering shaft or intermediate shaft- the shaft from gearbox to the universal joint inside column?

No you don't have to remove the column. You have to remove the bolt that holds the shaft on at each end and then work it through the boot at the firewall. You can unbolt the boot and remove the shaft and boot and work on it outside the truck where there is more room. Just make sure you pput the boot on the new shaft the correct way.
