Well, as said before we got the oil leak fixed. Now we have discovered steel shavings in the oil. Gregrob might be on to something with the turbo going bad. The main question that I have aside from the turbo what else could be taking a beating from all of that loose steel moving around. The guy changed his oil every 15k or so, & ran it hard since he got it.:poke: So do you think we could rebuild the turbo with a kit like Bean has or will we have to get a another turbo? Also would the HPOP take a beating from the steel shavings too?
Just want to know what we are in for so we can tell the guy what he needs.

Its hard to say were all the shavings went. I would cut the filter open and check how much made it to there.
How big and how much shavings did you have?
I would be more concerned about the shavings in the pan up against the oil pick-up.

We were checking out the turbo today & I'd say it's shot. A few of the fins have some pieces missing out of them & they are all black. There is more shaft play than usual too. We're not sure what to tell the guy. Just wondering if we can use a rebuild kit or be better off with another turbo?

What kind of air filtration system did this truck have? Was it ever maintained? You might want to check the compression in the cylinders because if there is that much damage to the compressor, I am guessing that the engine may have ingested quite a bit of dirt. Alternatively, he may have just run the turbo over it's rated boost and killed it that way.

We arn't dealing with high class when it comes for care on this truck. The guy was changing his oil every 15k because he's an "expert" when it comes to Diesels!
He had the stock air box & was running some kind of chip awhile ago. I was feeling the intake hose & it was oily (CCV) but you could feel a little bit of dirt too. He said that he was racing someone once & his check engine light came on & then he said it wouldn't shift right, then he didn't know why. He has the boost & pyro but they arn't hooked up at the moment. His boost gauge is for a gasser that he said they installed a T in the MAP line. I have no idea where he had the pyro hooked up. It also has a Reman Ford 4R100 that when we drained the fluid was more brownish than redish! So I's say that sums up everything there.
So do you guys think the engine's worth fixing or will it need a whole rebuild? I'm thinking that might be the only way to get all the steel shavings out. I agree haul n horses, I think the compression might be low with how much of a dog it is. We'll try to check that out soon.
Thanks guys!

Small enough to fit through the oil pump pickup screen.

How do you check the compression on a 7.3L Powerstroke?
There is an adapter that screws into the glowplug hole and allows you to assess the pressure.

Is there significant blowby? Just unscrew the oil filler cap while its idling and let it sit there loose, If it dances or gets thrown off the filler tube due to blowby then I would say the motor is toast.

Well IMHO either a total rebuild or a rebuilt engine.I went through something like that on a gasser. The engine builder I was talking to told me to do a complete rebuild cause the shavings are through out the engine and it would most likely not last to long.

Well we pulled the turbo off last night & discovered where the shavings are coming from. The wheel is toast, there are small chunks missing from it. It will also turn but it doesn't keep spinning. We're going to order a rebuild kit from Bean & see what happens. Also found out that the pedistal is leaking too. The guy doesn't want to rebuild the engine. It's a work truck so he would rather run it into the ground. Really a shame to see but it ain't my truck.:poke:

UPDATE-We finally got the turbo rebuilt & back on the truck around 4:00 AM today. We used the kit from Beans, a wicked wheel, & the ATS exhaust housing that Bean sells. I think it's safe to say that now we know how to remove / repair / replace a 7.3L Superduty turbo. We took it for a drive & it's like night & day. Before you could stand on the pedal & my IDI would still beat it. Now with a homemade Tymar intake it runs like a stock 7.3L should. Still not saying much for the steel shaving in the oil but it's a hard use work truck & the guy really doesn't care. Not my truck, not my problem anymore...
