I hacked off the old downpipe yesterday to replace it. There seemed to be a fair amount of soot right at the top connector. I don't recall it being excesssively sooty when it was off for the transmission repair. Is that normal and I am sure sooty is not a word.

If you've got soot anywhere, it's from a leak

If the soot was on the collector then your up pipes are probably leaking

Time to either replace them (preferably with the bellowed version), or get new donut gaskets for them. If you go the new donut gasket route, you will be doing it again at some point in the future, and you will learn that it is not a fun job at all with the trans in place!
