Hey guys... I need help...

I have a 2001 Powerstroke 7.3 ... about a week ago, I was driving home and noticed the truck acting funny, it started to loose power and smoke like a white gray smoke.. a lot of it.. right before it died. I tried to crank it and all it would do is sputter like it wanted to crank, but it didn't have the fuel to do so. I had just fueled the truck before it died.... So I know it was not lack of fuel.

I let it sit for a bit and it turned back on.. drove it for about 3-5 mins and it began to die out the same way. I let it sit again bout 20-30 mins and it will give me about 3-5 mins of run time till it dies again. Now its been parked out on my drive way and every morning I crank her up and let her run till she starts to knock real loud, start running on a few cylinders and then dies.... try and start her up again and she tries, but wont until I let her sit for a few 10-15 mins and then she will start up again for a min or two before she dies again.

What is the problem? What is that knocking sound before she dies? I know this is out of left field, but like I said ... I really need some advise and I figured who better than a fellow powerstroke owners to ask. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

Post info on your truck. Year, mileage.....

Sounds like you cracked a tip and might be dumping fuel into a cylinder. The knocking is the sound of it starting to hydro lock. DON"T keep starting it or you'll cause damage to the pistons, bearings and bend a rod. Pull out the glow plugs and turn the engine by hand while someone looks at which cylinder squirts fuel. Pull that injector and inspect. Be careful because the fuel will squirt out with force.

The truck is a 2001 F350 7.3 with 309,xxx The knocking sound only starts towards the end of its 3-5 min cycle of being on...right before it dies. After leaving it for some 10-15 mins... its starts again no knock... stays on for about 30 secs then starts the knocking for about 10-15 secs then dies. Seems like the longer I let it cool/sit, the longer it will stay on..up to 3-5 mins....That make any sense?

Thanks again yall...

It sounds like it is lacking in fuel pressure. You might want to check the fuel filter housing after it dies to see if it is full of fuel or empty. It should stay full all of the time. Could be a failing fuel pump, excessive inlet restriction to the fuel pump from possibly restricted fuel inlet filters in the tank or possibly compression entering the fuel system through a lifted injector or cracked tip. Good luck

I was thinking the same.

Ive never seen a drop in fuel pressure cause massive amounts of smoke. If your truck is doing this?
youve blown the tip of an injector off. To keeps starting the thing is only gonna make it worse. you need to pull your injectors. As mentioned above you will begin to bend expensive parts by trying to run the truck.

So..do you guys think I should start it up one more time to check the bowl after it turns itself off? Should I be ok?

Umadbro.... I just got your post... Thanks for your input. What other indications should I have if I cracked or dropped a tip? Why is does it blow the white/gray smoke?

Is the smoke that heavy the entire time it is running? You might want to play it safe and check the injector tips for cracking first. I would hate to hear that you bent a rod or something worse.

BLOWBY hit it right on the head... low fuel pressure is laughable....man people should not open there mouth sometimes....

truck runs for a few minutes until it hydrolocks... stop firing the engine, pull the injectors and have the broken/cracked tip fixed....

IMO buy a new set and forget it.

Ok... Just got it back home... the shop I took it to, they are a PSD specialist, he said that it was a "fuel delivery problem" he checked it out as a favor so, I was kinda touchy about busting his balls for answers... but he did mention that if it was shutting down because of a hydro lock situation, then it would not even turn over again, when I attempted to start it again.. and it did. Now it wont start for nothing, but it was there for a while. So lets say that its not hydro locking and that it is being deprived of enough fuel.... why was it smoking so badly and mind you, it would not smoke after that one day it broke down on me... after that it was your basic bit of white gray smoke and then it was fine... then it would die after making that knocking sound in the video. Remember, if I wanted to crank it right after it died, I could... it would turn...it just would not catch enough to start. .... How is that for a damn head scratcher???

Help me out guys... im a broke sum bitch and I need to get this truck running again.

Thanks again

Your original post says you just fueled up the truck. Are you sure you have good fuel? What is your fuel pressure? When you get this figured out please post the results.

Ok.. well im on my own with regards to getting you a fuel pressure reading... How would someone do it that didnt have the computer or scanner? I mean I am not a very mech inclined... oil change, alt replace, AC comp change, thats the only stuff ive done, actual hands on... I am a great observer of the truck and all its ticks and thumps, its characteristics... I mean if you guys ask the questions, I could answer them to the best of my ability, but I lack the experience you guys have with this amazing truck... Long story short... How in hell do I check the fuel pressure with out the scanner tool, lol? Better yet... is there anyone in Houston, TX that has AI for this truck or a comparable tool that would be willing to donate some time or let me borrow the unit for a few days... Ill leave you my wallet, watch... hell ill leave you my wife!! J/K..but really...anyone?

Thanks guys

Just wanted to check in with you guys.... Who was it that suggested fuel pump? Yeah...it was the freakin fuel pump.... damn month sitting there...It was the fuel pump...OMG it was the freakin fuel pump!! 15 mins later its working. I was so freaked out that it was indeed hydro locking and that wasw killing the motor, but then I remembered... I can still crank it right after it died, so it cant be hydro locking... well it was the fuel pump. Thanks guys for all the brain storming.... Anybody know what damage I would do if I ran the truck with a missing injector..I know its bad.

Thanks guys
