Hey i blew my engine on my 7.3 2001 excursion. I bought another one with 62k miles and tore it apart. I found 2 bent push rods and 2 valves had left marks in the pistons. I was wondering if i should change the valves aswell as the pistons? Sorry for bad english i am from norway

So you bought a bad engine to replace a bad engine? Yes, you most definitely need to change valves if they touched pistons. Even if they look fine, you could have a "low or no" compression problem. Do you have a machinist near your location? A specialist in engine specifications with tools for checking the parts? If you don't know what caused the engine you bought to fail, you may be installing the same problem into your vehicle. It needs to be carefully inspected by a specialist.

Thank you for the reply. I live in norway and ford trucks are pretty rare so engine machinist shops around here for american engines are not common. The other shops wont take em. I think im gonna change the valves butt they check out when i checked them. Do you know what might have caused it to bend the push rods?

Did you check the timing marks before disassembling? If the valves contacted the pistons it's likely the timing chain jumped, probably from the engine ingested water. Do the bearings look like it ran out of oil? Any metal shavings or scorched looking parts? Do the crank and cam rotate without runout with a dial indicator?

Make sure the engine did not seize. Get a good look at the main and rod bearings and make sure no push rods are bent. Check for a good rotation of the crank and that the pistons all reach the same height of travel.

How did you "blow your engine"? It may be in better shape than the one you found.

One things that will bend push rods is a broken piston ring that is on top and the valve impacts it.

The 62k miles - it sounds like that one was abused, which is why I am asking about your original engine. Do you race? Compete in towing?

All good questions. Which all throw up red flags. If I t was me, I would reassembly that 62k motor and figure out a way to repurpose it and hope to get some of my $$$ back. As something doesn't equate. The 7.3L is a very Stought, strong, powerful engine with a proven history. A half million miles when properly maintained is not common.

For the amount of money you are about to sink into this mystery motor, most likely with no positive return and or experience, you would fair better to search further out if not to your European neighbors or even back to the US , for a rebuilt or a used running motor with a known history. Why? For your sanity and the lack of resources REQUIRED to successfully accomplish what you are seeking.

I had a 1967 Ford Mustang Fastback I raced in California and eventually shipped over to England. Why? because I called home and mom said little brother was escorted home by the police. Asked for what? Doing 95 mph in a 35mph zone. With my Mustang!! In a dangerous curvey road in just a few miles from corner store to the neighborhood.

Left it at home when deployed with directions to drive occasionally to keep battery charged. So, to save my brother's life, I was still in the window to have a POV shipped so I had it sent to me.

So short is, my Mustang wasn't high maintenance. But I couldn't find just your standard maintenance parts. I had to get my dad to ship me parts when needed something. I wouldn't even attempt a motor rebuild knowing what I know now.

Hey sorry i have been gone, work 2 weeks on 2 weeks off as hevy equipment mechanic aprentice. Ill be back on the 14 feb. Ckecked the cranck shaft and rods before i left they all looked good to me. I am going to take some pictures when i get home so that you guys that know more than me can take a look. Thank you for the help btw

I had a 2001-2002 7.3 with powder steel rods. Dident know that it was not okay to push boost whit em before it blew out the side of the engine block 😂

Thanks for the fix / clarifying. Clarified "Sought" too . Never a good thing to stay up late, sit by the fireplace sipping some nice warm brown water, then respond to a post on a forum. Retired recently. Second time. Spend most of my days lately in my shop wrenching on my 7.3 project. Probably 10+ hours a day. Now I can stay up later. Thus, I can read up on some diesel sites now that I don't have to get up before daylight to go to work :)

I was lucky enough to spend a short time in Norway years ago. Worked in the Northern part of Norway. We got a long weekend off so some friends and I drove down to Oslo. What a beautiful country Norway is. We had a great time in Oslo. Have to say the Norwegians we met wherever we went were a lot more friendly towards, and receptive to, Americans than the French and even the British in some parts of Great Britain.

Oh, just had a flashback. Late on night we were leaving a local pub. And on our walk back we were blessed to witness the Aurora Borealis light show in the northern skies. Totally freaking awesome! I always think back to those days and think if we only had cell phones back then. The awesome picture I would have today.

Good luck on your project. Looks like your in with a good group of guys that will be able help you out through the process.
