Hey Folks,

I'm thinking of buying a 08 6.4 and heard there was/is a problem with the radiators. Something about the plastic side busting. Has there been a fix to this? What should I look for when looking one over?

The radiator problem is takin care of by a recall at the dealer. if the truck is at a dealer they probably took care of it. the problem was mostly in job1 trucks that i heard of. i took mine to the dealer for another problem and they did the recall then so i havent had a problem since. also its not really the radiator it was a problem with a pressure valve in the system and it would build up pressure and blow out a weak spot in the side tanks on the radiator. the truck ur looking at most likely already is fixed.

The recall was not on the radiator. It was to install the venturi tee fitting on the coolant hose from the radiator to the degas bottle. Ford did allow for the radiator to be replaced under warranty if it was leaking at the time the recall was being performed but not after the recall was done. Now there is a TSB for repeat leaking radiator that has the tech moniter the engine oil temp and coolant temp and if the oil is over 8 degrees hotter than coolant temp you are to replace the thermostats and leaking radiator, but the radiator can only be covered under warranty if the thermostats need replacing. And yes ford does call for the thermostats back and if they test good they do not pay the dealer for the warranty claim on the leaking radiator.

So in this case (bad thermostat) the warranty is the engine warranty and not the 3year/36?

Doesnt this TSB say to replace the radiator anyway? Or does it not specify which warranty (radiators or thermostats)?

09-23-1 6.4L DIESEL ENGINES - REPEAT RADIATOR LEAK - BUILT ON OR BEFORE 9/14/2009

Publication Date: November 9, 2009

FORD: 2008-2010 F-Super Duty


ISSUE:
Some 2008-2010 F-Super Duty vehicles built on or before 9/14/2009 and equipped with a 6.4L diesel engine may exhibit repeat radiator leaks due to malfunctioning (hyper-extended) high temperature thermostats.

ACTION:
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Verify the coolant leak is from the radiator, refer to pin point test (PPT) A found in the Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 303-03.
Verify the venturi tee is installed.
If installed, confirm it is installed correctly (note - orientation direction on part). Refer to applicable Field Service Action (FSA) for vehicle built on or before 5/15/2008.
If not installed, install per applicable FSA on vehicles built on or before 5/15/2008.
Prepare the vehicle for a test drive.
If the coolant leak at the radiator is large enough to cause an unsafe test drive or potential for engine/vehicle damage, proceed to Step 5.
Before driving the vehicle confirm the coolant level is at minimum level or above in the degas bottle. If required add 50/50 mix to coolant bottle.
Test Drive - use an Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS) or equivalent and monitor engine oil temperature (EOT) and engine coolant temperature (ECT) parameter identifiers (PIDS).
With EOT at 195 °F (91 °C) drive on the highway unloaded at 55-70 MPH (89-113 Km/h) constant speed to observe EOT and ECT temp.
Test results/next steps:
If EOT is less than 8 °F (4.4 °C) higher than ECT, and the coolant temp fluctuates roughly 5 °F (2.7 °C) - the thermostats are okay and do not need to be replaced. Replace just the radiator. Refer to WSM, Section 303-03 (Engine Cooling).
If EOT exceeds ECT by greater than 8 °F (4.4 °C) or if the ECT readings fluctuate 10 to 12 °F (5.55-6.66 °C) roughly every 30 seconds - replace both thermostats and radiator. Refer to WSM, Section 303-03 (Engine Cooling).
If vehicle is not drivable and the coolant leak is found to be from the radiator, remove and replace both thermostats and radiator. Refer to WSM, Section 303-03 for both radiator and thermostat removal procedure and approved cooling system draining, filling and bleeding procedures.

the warranty would be engine not 3/36. when the warranty claim is submited the causal part is listed as the thermostat. if you list the radiator has the causal part the claim is rejected. the tsb does tell you to replace the leaking radiator but does not extended the covage past 3/36

I'm not trying to be argumentative actually this discussion is taking place on another forum. Its pointed out by the tech (whos says his dealership and warranty rep agree with his interpratation) is stating because the TSB states the casual part as the thermostat it would be covered.

Concerning the what this states:

That in either description the radiator is replaced.


Just for my infomation, if I take this TSB to my dealer and he performs all the above tests and does not find the THERMOSTAT at fault will I be charged the time he took to test the thermostat as requested by this TSB?

If the oil cooler is plugged one needs to pull the waterpump and inspect the front cover for cavitation. Been down this road................

Oil cooler can get clogged when the front cover is cavitated and the aluminum from the cover collects in the oil cooler. The oil cooler can then leak oil into the cooling system which can then cause catostophic damage to the whole engine if the oil level gets to low. This also happens to the 6.0 but engine damage was not as big of a issue with the HUEI injecton system, the engine would stall once the oil level was around 6 quarts low.

So this would show when the Oil temp is above normal maybe when doing the test for the 8 degree difference it will be noticed. What are other signs besides low oil levels...oil in coolant, oil leaking around outside of coolers?

I would'nt care. Why should someone be penalized for upgrading and safeguarding there engine? Some dealers are run by douchlords.
