Puttin' the stroker to the test

Since installing my TN turbo, 6.0 intercooler, 6.0 tranny cooler and big oil, I got to test them out hardcore this weekend.

Took my 38' Raptor toyhauler loaded with 3 quads and 112 gallons of water out camping. Probably a little over 15,000 lbs.. Went up a 10% grade that was almost 5 miles long.. My egt's never got over 1150 degrees with lots of power.. My TN was boosting to about 24lbs the whole way. Pulled it at about 45 mph then saw my tranny temps climb.. Tranny peaked at about 210 degrees at the top of the hill and my water temp was up there too but all-in-all it was pretty impressive to pull that kind of load. My buddy who has a Duramax pulling a 8000 lbs toyhauler couldn't believe it.. He was struggling to keep up :D. Wonder how some stage 2's would work for me?

Nick, you can downshift an Auto, by pulling the lever down a click.:poke:

Patrick, how much power you need?:D
When that day comes that i can only have a auto and pull that POS auto down a gear because it's to dumb to know how to shift it's time to start driveing a car.:lame:

You've obviously never owned a REAL auto.:D Does your handshaker downshift by it's self?:poke::D

The only time I downshift, is when I shut the OD off.;)
Yep thats right I have never owned a real auto but still does not make me want one. If maybe I could ge a 16 speed power shift that would be a good auto till then I will stick to my manual.
Power can't over come the autos down fall all the time. If both truck have 400hp each pulling 15,000 trailers in a hilly switch back road the manual will kill it every time. But a drag race the auto will win. every one has a reason for likeing a man or a auto I don't race or sled pull so I'll keep in the slow lane on the road so all of you autos can have your fun.:lame:

Really? Since when can you keep your foot on the floor and downshift with a manual pulling 15K and not destroy something?

On a steep grade with a manual and heavy load I garauntee you lose almost 10mph that you have to build up.

With an auto, you lose ZERO.
OK I;m wrong and autos are the best thing that happend since the light bulb Happy now guys.

I'm done
Nick, my biggest complaint with the handshaker, is everytime you shift, your boost is dropped. What happens when you hit the pedal again? SMOKE.

I agree, a Powershift with more gears would be great.
I'll tell you what greg Next year at the psd in co in aug I will race you with a pos man I bet I kick your ass wanna take me on that bet? and it wont be a 7.3 you will have to race the 5.9 cr :gun:.

Now since I do not want to not be a member any more I will say this how dum are you?. 10 mph to shift down thats a new one to me. I guess you don't pull a trailer much if you did you would of not said something so dumb. I have pulled trailers from ca to tx to mt to wy to co and much more I have never once have a 10mph slow down from grabing a gear.

please Kick me off and I will go away:rockwoot:
I haven't ever lost 10mph down shifting. I suppose in our little trucks the difference isn't as noticeable, but in larger equipment the advantage makes itself known in a hurry. First, I've never seen a driveline leave the truck at a high rate of speed down shifting (properly) a manual trans truck. An automatic also wastes a lot more HP than does a manual.

In a manual all you have is the parasitic drag associated with the bearings running in the lube oil. In an automatic you still have the rotating parts to account for in addition to running the hydraulic functions.

I've got two identical trucks at work. Both bought at the same time with the exact same equipment. Both trucks have the same engine, only difference is one has a RoadRanger 18sp and the other a 4560 Allison. The RoadRanger truck will top the same hill with the same load at least 12mph faster.
Jeeez Nick, Calm down!:poke: It's all good;). Some perfer that third pedal, and some don't even know what that pedal is for:confused:. Turning brakes, right?:D

You're gonna have to try harder than that crybaby. :redspotdance:
I'm gonna side with Deerezilla I prefer a manual... and last week when i repo'ed a 32 foot camping trailer whos trailer brakes failed to work due to disrepair and shotty ownership, and not having any kind of weight distributing or torsion hitch, i was very happy i had that manual i could downshift with when the ####ers infront of me on the way back to the shop decided they needed to cut me off to get over to their exit which they knew was coming up but couldnt hang out behind me for ten more effing seconds........ i dont think any auto could keep up with nor help slow down a trailer as quickly and efficiently as a good driver with a manual transmission.......

If you wanted to downshift or otherwise do its job why would you get an auto.....????:poke:
if i wanted it to downshift by itself id have gotten a manual....????:poke:
Huh?
double huh? That makes no sense..

think or know? you ever driven a psd with a built auto or one with just a tugger kit?

I'll bet you a $100 and back it up with video that my truck will compression brake ANYTIME I put it into a lower gear than required for the speed. Hell I'll even load up my cabover camper, and tow my rockcrawler up and down some hills to prove it.

my paypal is [email protected]... feel free to send the money now, cause you will loose this one :flipa:

Oh and for the record, I would actually rather have a 6spd in my tow rig. However I could not find the truck I wanted with one, so I settled for what I could find. After doing the trans mods I've done, I'm pretty damn satisfied. It's a night & day difference and I ain't got no more money it than a good clutch for the ZF. My point is don't knock it untill you've tried it and yes, I've towed with a 6spd psd.

why spend all that extra money making an auto do what a 6spd will do stock??

6-speed can't do what an auto can. Not even close.

Clutches aren't too cheap either.

It depends on what you want your truck to do. besides id rather replace a clutch than have to pay someone to figure out whats wrong with my transmission, and maybe fix it right the first time. *shrugs* it really depends on what you want your truck to do. Towing id rather have a manual. Maybe if i was into racing where an auto shifting through gears is always going to be faster than a manual then maybe id spend the money for a built auto. But IMHO for what i use my truck for I'll stick with my manual

turn the power up on yours and get back to us on how that *stock* clutch is doing :hehe:
